History was never my favorite subject in school. Not to discredit my high school teachers, but they presented it in a way that didn't spark my mind. It wasn't until I started watching "Reign," an American television show centering around Mary, Queen of Scots, did I start to appreciate the subject of history. This show was so interesting to me, that after each episode, I did some research to learn which parts were made up, and which plots were historically accurate.
With this all said, coming into 1789 was just as intriguing. Admittedly, fanfictions set in a time period before the 80's, are stories I normally don't gravitate towards. This book however, had me hooked from the first few words. The author is incredibly talented and well-versed. Each word I read, I was completely enthralled by; submerged in the world the author created. Mind you, I was already captivated by the well written story blurb.

During a grueling winter, at the turn of the century in Paris, France, we meet the protagonist Atley. She's homeless, hungry, and accepts her untimely demise. However, an unlikely hero steps into her life- an elderly woman named Zona, who scolds the young girl for sitting on the freezing ground. Zona takes Atley to a massive home, where she is able to care for the weak, gaunt girl. After a couple days rest, Atley is well enough to seek work within the Parisian mansion.

This is where things pick up.
The house of Styles is run by Lord Desmond, an Englishman with two children. The eldest named Gemma, and the one with "wild, curly dark hair and piercing green eyes," (ch. 4) is the ever condescending, Harry. During her time in the Styles home, Atley shows great work ethic. She enjoys her time with the other workers and finds a genuine friendship with the Irish farmhand, Niall. But Harry's patronizing seeps through the walls, and becomes drawback to working for the Styles family. Nevertheless, Atley pushes through.

What I love about Atley, is also the same quality that frustrates me. Her altruism is inspiring. For a girl with no money, nice clothes, or a home to call her own, Atley, without hesitation, is willing to put the needs of others before her own. I find this incredibly heartwarming, but more often than not, I found myself screaming at her, because I just wanted Atley to be safe. This is one of the many talents of the author. She creates characters you want to side with; someone to root for. Each character has a distinctive voice and essence about them, commanding the page every time Atley, Niall, Zona, Harry, or any other character enters the scene.

1789 is more than just a story of romance- it highlights the twisted ways in which the rich entitle themselves to everything, without regard of who it affects. It showcases the harsh realities of war and how it influences the poor. And mostly, 1789 focuses on the unshakable impulse of a young girl who will fight for what is truly right. Check this story out, because it clearly defies the typical traits that makeup a fanfiction.
