Chapter 5

(Jessica’s POV)

I drove home after a long day of school and started to prepare for work. Yes I know, I have a job. But if I wanted to afford gas in my car, food for my belly, and my nice clothes then I had to work for it. I put on the medium length black shirt and the cream shirt provided by Lucy’s Coffee Hut and headed off to work. I arrived just in time for my shift and punched my card in. I immediately put of my belt that had my notebook and pen in it and set off to find Lucy out front. She gave me this job a month after I moved here and was almost like an aunt to me. She was also someone that was hard to let in but eventually moved right inside my heart with a smile and wise words. She was tall, about 5’8 with light blond hair and amber eyes. She was a curvy woman that I’m sure gave many men a run for their money. She was single, and I guess preferred to stay that way, since she always complained about how men were such pigs and this and that.

I rounded the corner of the chic coffee place and stood at the register. I loved this place so much. With the warm colors and low fluorescent lights, it felt so cozy. The food was to die for and the coffee was amazing. My favorite combo was a slice of strawberry pie and a caramel Frappuccino, with extra caramel. There were many different types of breads, pies, cupcakes, and other pastries. We also served teas of various kinds. Mate Tea was everyone’s favorite and Herbal coming at a close second.

I waited and cleaned the counter when I heard the door ding. I looked up to see none other than Asher Wilson coming my way, and a cute little boy clutching his hand tightly. He looked up to see me and smiled.

“Hello, welcome to Lucy’s Coffee Hut, how may I help you?” I asked. The little boy tugged on Asher’s pants and he moved down to meet his level. He whispered something in his ear as he looked the menu above him and then Asher stood back up.

“Uh yeah can I get a slice of cheesecake and a hot chocolate for him and a slice of blueberry bread and a white macchiato for me?” He ordered. His brother was smiling at me the whole time. I looked up to find Asher smiling at me too and I blushed automatically. I rang their order up and gave him the price. He handed me the money and I went to the back to have Lucy ring the order up. She looked at me and smiled.

“Hey sweetie, I didn’t even see you come in. How has your first day back at school been?” She asked. I smiled back at her.

“Great Luc, thanks for asking.” She handed me the order and I took it back our front. Asher looked back at me front the table they were seated at and walked up to the register.

“Hey I didn’t know you worked here. It’s great to see you again though.” He said.

“Yeah, I do, I’ve worked here for about 10 months now. If you don’t mind me asking, is that your little brother? He’s adorable.” I responded. He looked at the boy and then turned around with a big smile plastered on his face.

“Yeah, his name is Brayden. He’s four years old and a little monster. My mom’s at work so I thought I would treat him today.” He said with so much pride. I could tell he cared deeply for his family.

“That’s really sweet of you. Here’s your order by the way. It was nice seeing you again.” I blushed again as he winked at me.

“It was nice seeing you too. I’ll see you at school tomorrow.” He said and turned around to go. Before he did, he ran back to the counter.

“Hey, um, can I get your number?” He asked nervously. I blushed even deeper. OMG, he really wanted my number. I gave it to him and he finally turned to leave.

“Thanks again, bye Jessica.” And with that he took hold of his little brothers hand again and left out the door. I keep looking till I couldn’t see their figures anymore. Maybe getting close to someone isn’t a bad thing. Maybe Asher is the breath of fresh air that I needed.
