Chapter 7

(Jessica’s POV)

As Asher and I walk into the cafeteria, a big group of guys surround us. I recognize them as the guys on the varsity football team. Shaun stood at the front along with Alec, Cody, Patrick, Darren and Tyler. He had an easy smile on his face as they start patting Asher on his back. “Congratulations Wilson, and welcome to the team.” Tyler said. All the other boys started clapping and Asher was grinning from ear to ear. I was so proud of him. He deserved this. I stood there and waited for him but then all the guys went and sat down at our table. Now I know what you’re thinking. Is she popular now? Well, it seems that the guys have picked Asher over the skanky girls that they usually sit with. They guys brought their girlfriends over while me and Asher went to get our lunches. Once we got back to the table, it was clear to see that everyone was getting along well, which both of us were happy to see. As I talked to the girls, I learned their names. Victoria and Shaun were together, Clara and Alec, Olivia and Cody, Faith and Patrick, Megan and Darren were all couples and finally Tyler and Joana.

They were all so nice, sweet, and funny. I was so happy that they weren’t stuck up and mean. I also learned that like Joana and I, we all had similar taste in clothes. Clara had blonde hair and grey eyes, Olivia had blonde hair and brown eyes, Faith had black hair and blue eyes, Victoria had natural red hair and dark green eyes, and Megan had naturally wavy auburn curls with hazel eyes. They were all so beautiful and supported their boyfriends in football. Most of them had been together for a few months, some a year or two. I was a little envious of these girls, mostly because they had such good relationships and I didn’t. I had to think and remember why. It was their fault. It was what they did to my sister. I knew I would never forgive them. I had to think positive. I remember something my sister said. ‘Never let anyone tell you who you can be, or what you can’t do.’ I decided right then and there I wasn’t going to let anything stop me anymore. I was going to stop being the girl that was afraid and become the girl that I knew was always inside of me.

As we got further into lunch, the girls, along with Joana and I, decided to have a sleepover.

“We can have it at my house, my basement has enough space and a huge flat screen we can watch movies on.” Victoria suggested. Olivia nodded her head in agreement. Then Faith spoke up.

“Yeah, then we can go to the guys game together this Saturday. It’s at 7:30, so we’ll be able to get good seats.” She explained. We all nodded our heads in agreement and the decision was made. When the bell rang, I waved bye to the girls and met up with Joana, Asher and Tyler. While Joana and Tyler were talking, Asher pulled me aside. He looked a little nervous so I gently grasped his arm.

“Are you okay?” I asked worriedly.

“Um, yeah but I need to ask you something. I know I’ve only known you for a couple of days, but I’ve decided that I really like you Jessica so I was wondering if you wanted to go out with me next Friday.” He smiled nervously. My mind was blown. He actually wanted to go out with me. Me! Jessica Northe! I quickly answered him.

“I would love to Asher.” I said with a smile. He grinned at me.

“Okay, great. I’ll pick you up at 7.” He said. I didn’t ask where we were going. I assumed he hadn’t planned it yet and he wanted it to be a surprise. As we headed to our next class. My phone vibrated with a text from my mom.

Mom:

Sweetie, I have something very important to tell you when you arrive home from school.

Me:

Okay.

I looked down a little anxiously, wondering what my mom was talking about. Asher grabbed my arm and stopped me from walking. He looked down at me concerned. “Are you okay?” He said. I looked up into his hazel eyes and felt myself calm a little bit. I let out a miniature sigh. “Yeah I’m fine, it’s just and urgent text from my mom, it sounds important.” He reached down and squeezed my hand. “Well I hope that everything is okay.” He said.

After classes were over, I hoped in my car and raced home. I had to wonder what had my mom so antsy. As I got out and ran up the steps to open the door, a black bundle tackled my legs.

Sissy!” it yelled. What the heck?

I went further into the house and sat down with the little girl in my lap. She was beautiful. Long curly black hair that reached the middle of her back, pale skin with rosy cheeks and bright blue eyes. She had a perfect row of teeth and the cutest little hands and feet. I realized that she only had a dark blue sundress on and she looked about four. As she was bouncing on my lap, my mom came in. She grimaced at us. “I see you found Paige. She’s your father’s other daughter. Her mother passed away and your father didn’t want her so he brought her here. We will be taking care of her now.” She explained. Of course he had another daughter. I couldn’t be mad though, he helped create a gorgeous little girl that I knew I would love. She was so happy and full of life. I wanted to keep her that way. I looked up at my mom.

“I’m fine with it mom, I’m glad she’s here and safe.” I said with a smile. My mom beamed at me. Paige looked up at me and smiled.

“Hi, I’m Paige, I’m your sister. I’m four years old and Mommy says I get my hair from daddy, is that true?” I was assuming she meant my mother, I didn’t think she could really remember hers. “Yes, that’s true, and I am your sister.” She walked over to my mom and she picked her up. I could tell my mom loved her already, as if she were her own. She told me to take her up and show her where she would be staying until her room was ready. I found some of my old dolls for her to play with and left her there. I walked back down the stairs to see my mom sitting at the kitchen table. She had a manila folder in her hand and was looking through some papers. When she looked up at me, she smiled. I took the seat next to her.

“I assume these are adoption papers?” I asked. She confirmed it by nodding her head.

“I want to give this little girl the best future she could possibly have. She already loves you. And my heart swelled when I heard her call me mommy. It reminded me of you at that age. She’s perfect.” My mom’s eyes gleamed. I could tell how much this meant to her and how hard she was going to work to make it happen. Adoptions usually took about a year and six months. I knew my mom could do it. I wanted the exact same things for Paige. She deserves the best after Dad abandoning her and losing her real mother. I knew that for her, I would be the best big sister I could possibly be. It’s what Audrey would have wanted.
