Chapter 6

*Asher’s POV*

I woke up the next morning to a little body jumping on my chest. I opened my eyes and found Brayden grinning down at me. Laughing loudly.

“Bubba! Bubba! Wakey, wakey! I want breakfast. Mommy said you have to make me breakfast and take me to Mrs. Miller’s house.” He was patting my face before I reached up for his hand. I flipped us over and started tickling him. He was squealing and laughing. I started smiling.

“Okay Asher you win!” He jumped of the bed and ran down the stairs. I shook my head after him. This kid was a little monster. I looked over to my alarm clock and saw that it was 7:30. I put on a shirt and sweatpants and headed down stairs. I walked into the living room and found Brayden watching TV. I continued into the kitchen and pulled the pancake mix out of the pantry. As I was pulling out all the utensils and vegetable oil, my phone vibrated.

Jessica: Good morning (:

I smiled down at my phone. Wow, she really texted me. I texted back quickly.

Me: Good morning to you too (:

Jessica: So I was wondering what happened to you yesterday? I mean I know we don’t know each other that well yet but I was a little concerned and worried about you.

I bit my lip and looked over at my brother. He had managed to turn on the t.v. and find his cartoons. I shook my head. That little kid was going to be a genius. I quickly looked back down at my phone and thought about my reply. Could I trust her with what happened yesterday? Maybe I should give her a half truth. Then I replied.

Me: Uh I had an emergency, my mom didn’t have anyone to pick up Brayden after daycare yesterday and I wanted to make sure he got a babysitter.

I pressed send and waited for her reply. I knew that I might be able to trust her, but I didn’t know if it was true or not. I mean, I just met the girl yesterday. Even if I already felt closer to her than anyone else in this town.

Jessica: Oh okay. Well I’m glad everything is okay and I guess I’ll see you at school.

Me: Yeah every things great. Bye.

Jessica: Bye.

I turned to Brayden and snuck up on him. Then I grabbed him and lifted him in the air as he squealed. I started chuckling.

“Stop bubba! I’m gonna fall!” He laughed, even though he knew that I would never drop him.

“Who’s the best big brother in the world?” I asked. He kept laugh and giggling.

“You are bubba!” He exclaimed. I gently laid him back down on the couch and he picked up his little fist and punched me. I faked pain and quickly grasped my arm.

“Oww! That really hurt kid. I think my arm is gonna fall off.” I kidded. He just looked at me with his big hazel eyes. And omg he looked close to tears.

“I’m sorry bubba. Does it really hurt.” He questioned. He started rubbing the spot where he hit me and I chuckled.

“Nah, it doesn’t hurt to bad. But you’ve got a great right hook for the future.” I picked him up and hugged me. He snuggled into my chest.

“I love you bubba.” He whispered. I smiled down at him. I knew that from now on, it would always be my job to keep him happy and safe.

“Love you too kid.”

I entered the building with ten minutes till classes started. I headed straight for coach’s office. I figured if I got it over with now, then I would just be able to go home in the afternoon to pick up Brayden. I knocked on the door and waited for a hand signal before I quickly walked in. The man sitting behind the desk was well into his 40’s. With slightly graying hair and a built physic for an old guy, he looked every bit a coach. He stood up to shake my hand and I could see he had a couple of inches on me. His tan skin glowed under the light and dark brown eyes met mine. He gave me an easy smile.
