beautiful thinking, a good mind.
Nine years later...
Large yellow carnations burst forth from dark green bushes. Purple daisies sprouted randomly in the long grass, and baby breath twined in and out of bushes. A bird's sweet song filled the air, and a light breeze rustled all the trees around me. I smiled and let out a sigh, stretching out in the luscious grass.
"Sera!"
I sat up, looking around but saw no one. I ran a hand through my hair, wonderment filling my mind. Who just called my name? I shook my head, and stood up, dusting the dirt off my light blue sundress.
"Seraphina!"
I paused, there it was again. I twirled around and huffed. I glanced up at the passerine bird that sat in the weeping willow. It's black eye looked back at me. No, I'm crazy to think that a bird is talking to me.
"Seraphina Swelski!"
Something whacked my forearm, and I lurched up, looking around in confusion. Twenty pairs of eyes bore into me. I groaned inwardly, realizing what happened. I glanced at Mrs. Tpoler and blushed. Her brown eyes burned holes into me.
"What did I tell you about sleeping in my class? Or in anybody's classes in general?" She snapped, slamming the ruler she had hit me with on my desk. I jumped back, flinching and meeting her gaze guiltily.
"Sorry," I mumbled.
She sighed and pinched the bridge of her nose, tipping her head back to look up at the ceiling.
"Are you not getting enough sleep at night?" She asked, frowning at me. OUt of the corner of my eye, I could see my classmates watching me, amusement written clearly on their faces. Algebra wouldn't be the same if they didn't get their daily dose of entertainment from Seraphina.
"Of course I am!" I lied, batting my eyes, "just... uh, I guess I don't know why I fall asleep during class."
Mrs. Tpoler crossed her arms and walked back up to the front of the classroom. She resumed her class, explaining some Algebra problem. I stared down at my textbook, its shining white pages looking at me with unblinking, accusing eyes. I huffed, and rested my chin in my hand, and glanced out the window. A swirl of polychromatic autumn leaves brushed against the glass.
I could just barely make out my reflection in the sun-filled window. My bluish-gray eyes were dull from sleepiness, and dark bags rested under them. My dark brown hair was a mess of curls and I grumbled as I ran a hand through it, in a failed attempt to fix it.
I ended up zoning out during the rest of Mrs. Tpoler's lesson. I picked up my book and pencils as the bell rang, and followed the stream of students out into the hallway. I trudged down the Junior Hall and got to my locker. I pulled out my backpack and slung it over my shoulder.
"Sera!"
I turned around and watched as my best friend, Aleah, shoved a group of boys out of her way and marched towards me. Her unruly red hair was sticking up in random places, and her cheeks were the same color as her hair. The usual playful spark in her eye danced in her pale green eyes and she smirked at me.
She glanced over her shoulder and grabbed my hand and dragged me away. I scuttled after her as she ran out of the school. Several kids grumbled as she mercilessly shoved them out of her way. I apologized for her and they just sent me unthankful glares.
