A couple hours later we landed just outside a very large gate. We took the headset off and hopped outside. I covered my nose with the corner of my jacket so that dust wouldn't get in my mouth.
With my bag slung over my shoulder, we headed towards the gate. Once the chopper was gone the dust started to settle down.
I pulled the corner of my of my jacket away from my face and walked towards the large door that separates the people from the outside world.
The door opened with a loud creak revealing a person wearing the U.S. military uniform.
I looked closer and realized, the person was a female. Her hair was jet black in a low tight bun. She was holding an AK-47, resting snug in her hand. Beside her was a pure breed Belgian Malinois.
This must be her. I thought.
"You must be the Lieutenants, the Sergeant sent you to fill in for the other agents." She said, her voice firm. "I'm Lieutenant Buchmann." She held her hand out for me to shake.
“I’m Lieutenant Wolfe and these are my friends. Lieutenant’s Jason Hertz, Kyle Gregson, Peter Williams, Drew Clark, Chris Bouwman, Liam Johnson and Zack Rodriguez.”
They all shook hands and took a step back respectfully.
“It’s nice to meet you Lieutenants.” she motioned to her dog, “This is Ashes and her brother is Dante. I'll help get the dogs get to know you guys because, believe it or not they will be working alongside you.” she motioned for us to step in the gate and closed the big door behind us, locking it from the inside.
I looked around and saw run down clay buildings with one to two windows and a single door. Some houses had blankets for doors, but a door nonetheless.
The Lieutenant walked in front of the group, taking us further into the rugged town.
As we walked by, the children scurried into their homes, as if to take cover from an attack.
“Why are the children running to their home? Don’t they know that we are here to protect them?” Jason asked, watching the last of the children ran in their home.
“They don’t know who you guys are. They try to stay away from outsiders.” she replied. “You guys will be assigned to a post. Whether it’s guarding the gate or walking around the town at night. You will be able to rotate and some of you will have to work the night shift as well as the day shift.” she said in a more firm voice.
We walked up to the tent, but before opening the flap the Lieutenant held her hand for us to stop.
“Wait here.” she said and disappeared behind the flap with Ashes trailing behind her.
A couple minutes went by before the flap opened up, revealing the Lieutenant. She motioned for us to follow her.
I had to blink a few times so my eyes could adjust to the dim light. In front of us was a desk with someone behind it, standing up. Behind him was another flap.
Probably leads to the cots.
“Hello, boys. We’ve been waiting for you.” he said. “I’m Sergeant Wood.” he stepped around the desk and held out his hand.
I shook his hand firmly nodding my head in respect and introduced my team.
“Hello sir. I’m-”
“Lieutenant John Wolfe. I heard lot’s of good things about you and your team.” he said walking behind his desk and addressed the rest of the team. “And you guys must be Jason Hertz, Kyle Gregson, Zach Rodriguez, Peter Williams, Liam Johnson, Chris Bouwman, and Drew Clark.”
