The door opened revealing piles of clay that used to be a building, fire, dirt in the air, so thick that you could barely see twenty feet in front of you. But those things didn't bother me. It was the silence that followed.

There was no screaming, no guns firing and no bombs exploding.

Everything was quiet.

I heard Nick shift uneasily.

"Come on." I told him in a quiet voice. "Stay close to me and watch your back."

Without looking at him I crept along the wall and through the city. I could hear him shuffling behind me as we crouched low. Though it didn't seem like it was necessary; it was like everyone disappeared.

Bodies littered the dirt floor, most shot, others stabbed and some who stepped on their own bombs. Limbs we're detached from bodies as the blood soiled the earth.

All you could smell was the dirt in the air, blood, rotting bodies and gun powder. All I want to do is get the radio and get back to the cells.

"We're almost there." I told Nick, without looking at him.

The dirt settled down a bit, but not enough to see clearly.

As we neared the tent, I heard the faint static of the radio.

I paused next to a clay wall and waited until Nick was behind me, which didn't take very long.

"Do you hear that?" I asked in my low voice, looking back at him.

He waited for a couple seconds before nodding his head.

I looked around, to see if the coast was clear, even though it felt like I didn't need to.

"We have to get to the tent." I told him.

"Let's do it."

I looked back at him and nodded. Crouching low, we jogged over to the flap and got  inside. The desk stood to the right with no papers on it.

The static got louder as I lifted the flap that led to the cots.

Suddenly, the static from the radio was replaced with a voice.

"Lieutenant Buchmann, report."

Nick and I looked at each other before walking towards the back of the tent. The static sounded like it was coming from Mariah's cot.

"Lieutenant Buchmann, it's Sergeant Wood. Do you read me?"

The static came back as we got to the cot.

"Where is it?" Nick asked.

I breathed in through my nose and kneeled down. I bent over and grabbed the machine from under the bed.

"Lieutenant Buchmann, do you copy?"

I set it on her cot and grabbed the radio and pushed the button on the side.

"Sergeant wood. This is Lieutenant Wolfe reporting back in Afganistan." I told him, letting go of the button. Even though he knows where we are, I still have to tell him so that he can tell the others where we are.

"Lieutenant Wolfe, where is Lieutenant Buchmann?" Sergeant wood came back.

"She's safe." I quickly replied before he could ask any more questions.

They seem to have a connection of some sort.

"Lieutenant Wolfe, I have some news that you, Lieutenant Buchmann and your team need to hear. Are they around?"

"No, sir. We had to go to the underground prison to take cover. Everyone is down there."

There was a moment of silence before I pushed the button. "I can take the radio down there and we can call you back when we get there."

"10-4, Lieutenant. Please hurry."

"Will do. Over and out." I hooked the mic back to the portable radio and stood up.

Nick stood besides me and took the radio from the bed.

I nodded at before turning around only to be tackled to the ground. On instinct, I quickly reached up to push the intruder off of me when i felt something wet touching my arms and hands.

I opened my eyes only to close them again when I felt a very wet tongue, gliding across my face.

I heard Nick shuffle around until I felt Rose being pulled away.

"Come on dog." Nick grumbled as he grabbed the scruff of her neck.

Her playful manner turned into anger as she turned around to snap at Nick, a low growl coming from the back of her throat.

He cursed under his breath as he jumped back and raised his hands up in surrender.

I chuckled and sat up while wiping the slobber off my face.

I looked up at him and he glared back.

"Do you mind?" he said, gesturing to Rose who stopped growling but kept a watchful eye on him.

"Calm down, Rose." I said, focusing my attention on her and gently placing my hand on her back.

She snapped out of her trance and spun around to face me with her tail wagging.

"Hey, girl." I greeted, petting her head. "Mariah has been looking for you."

At the mention of her name, Rose started to whine.

"I know." I stood up and looked at Nick. "Grab the radio. We have to hurry."

He nodded and picked up the radio.

"Come on, Rose." I said, walking towards the flap. Rose was besides me and Nick was behind.
Before I could lift the flap that leads outside, I was tackled to the ground.
