Burke's POV

"Hey sunshine, wanna team up?" I asked Mitch, who visibly stiffened. She turned around and glared at me "I really hate that nickname" She said, loosening up "I know" I said smiling at her. "Hey Burke, come on let's go get the paper" Darnell said pulling me away from my sunshine. I winked at her and turned to follow Darnell. "Dude that was not cool" I said laughing a little. "Awww why not, that girl was asking to be your partner and I'm pretty sure you would've said no" Darnell replied, putting a dent in the mood. "She didn't ask, I did, genius" I grumpily say while grabbing two papers for us. This sets him off and he tries to silently laugh, gasping for air while doing so. After a little he composed himself."Oh my god you already have your eyes on someone? Well that was FAST" he says half laughing again. "I never said I liked her.. she just... reminds me of someone from middle school." I say smirking. "So what's with the smirk?" Darnell asks. "Nothing it's just that girl from middle school said she liked me but I rejected her, she reminds me of Mitch but Mitch has more personality" I said, sitting down at our chosen table. "But her name is Mitch.." Darnell said, as if pointing out the obvious "I'm not deaf, I know that. It's probably a coincidence" I replied jokingly glaring at him "Okayyyy" He teased while I grabbed my pencil. "Why'd you grab your pencil?" he asked, looking genuinely confused "To do the work?" I said, more like a question. "Don't tell me you ACTUALLY do the work" He said looking at me, trying to keep in laughter "Well, fine, I'll skip this one only" I responded, giving in. He gave a 'Whoop' and started talking about which girls were hot or not. But the only girl on my mind was MY sunshine. After science class I followed the other students to the cafeteria. I stepped into the cafeteria and scanned the room, sunshine was nowhere to be found. "Hey, Burke come on, over here" Darnell called. I looked over at his table. He was sitting with the other guys from the sport activities. I nodded. Deflated, I sat with the guys. After a long, boring conversation, the bell rung and I stood to go to my next class, calculus, sunshine wasn't in that class, making the class even more boring than it already is. As I walked through the halls filled with waves of students I catch a glimpse of Mitch walking towards me with her nose in a book. Heh, how can she see where she's going while reading? As she gets closer, I'm thinking this is going to be that cliche moment where a guy and girl bump into each other. I open my arms, so she hopefully won't fall, and I'll get a hug. Once she's in range I try and wrap my arms around her, but still with her nose buried in her book, she ducks right under my arms and keeps walking. Well, that's what rejection feels like. Somehow I smirk at Mitch's action though. Playing hard to get, I like it.

As the last bell rang I quickly grabbed my things, slumped my backpack over my shoulders and ran to the door. I finally walk out of that nightmare called school and relish in my freedom. My eyes scan for sunshine and I catch a glimpse of her slipping through a crowd of students as if nothing, STILL having her nose in that book. I don't know how she can do it. I try to catch up with her, but I'm stopped by Darnell, Grover and Daryon. All making a wall between sunshine and I. "Hey dude do you wanna hang? Grover and Daryon have nothing to do so we're thinking we could do a guys night" Darnell says in a voice almost saying I can't say no. But, if I join them I won't be able to have some quality time with Mitch. "Uh sorry guys, I have a bunch of homework to do so I'm not sure if I can" I reply. "That's fine, we can hang after you do your homework" Grover suggests. Ugh why does he always ruin my plans? "Umm yeah sure well gotta run. See you guys soon" I say while pushing through them. I mean, it was no lie I did have homework, but that's not really the reason I didn't want to hang out with them. Well that plan went south. Hmm maybe if Mitch is still up for helping me with homework then maybe I can invite her to hang out with the guys. Is that to awkward? Will the guys even approve of me bringing her? Well that doesn't really matter, all I need right now is an opportunity to talk to Mitch.
