All the promises we made

I was sitting on breakfast with my new squad, when Commander Erwin came to talk to Captain Blake. "I leave them to you." Was all I could make out, but it was clear enough. Only minutes later Isabel was next to me and Levi and Farlan across me.

"What's with you today, (Y/n)" I glared at her. "What no "sis"?" I macked. Farlan looked at me shocked, but Levi's face was blank. What a surprise. "Hey, what happened to you?" I looked at Isabel's emerald eyes and for a second I almost cracked. Almost. "Don't worry you didn't do anything wrong. I just had a reality check." I looked at Levi. Your turn, bastard.

Captain Blake showed us the plan for our formation. A big part of his squad had been wiped out in the last expedition. What remained of it were a few, terrified and unexperienced soldeirs. I, Levi and Farlan were to ride just behind the Captain in the formation. That meant that when titans attack we would most likely be the 'first to be eaten'. What an irony.

I was ready to leave two hours before anyone else, because I needed to find Alice. I might have been pissed off by her disapperance, but that could still be my last day alive and I needed to see my best friend. On my way to her room I saw Hanji looking through a door lock. I tapped her on the shoulder and she jumped of surprise.

"What are yo-" She put her hand over my mouth. "Shhh" She gestured for me to bend and look through the lock as well. I rose an eyebrow. Her grin only widened. I looked through the lock. Was that Alice!? "I really wanted to talk to you before we leave. I don't know if I'll come alive after this..." She said. Farlan Church was sitting across her. "Yes, you will. We both will. You're strong and smart, nothing can bring you down. I love you, Alice." My heart skipped a beat. "Promise me you'll survive, Farlan!" He pressed his forehead to hers. "I promise." They shared the most gentle and beautiful kiss I've ever seen. It wasn't lustful, it was full of love. Just like father used to kiss mum.

I stepped away from the door and looked at Hanji. How could I have been so blind? For the last month since the three underground thugs joined I had been thinking of no one, but myself. And since Levi literary told me to 'fuck off' three weeks ago it'd been nothing but trying to show how much better than him I was. I didn't even notice that my best friend was in love...

A wave of shame washed over me. I hugged Hanji. "Be safe, Hanji. I believe in you." She smiled and nodded. I kissed her on the cheek. "You too." She said. I turned around. I had two more people I had to talk to. If we both made it out alive after this expedition I would talk to Alice. Right now I didn't deserve to say my goodbyes with her.

I turned left in the corridor. Leaning on the wall were Isabel and Levi. "Where's Farlan we need to talk over the plan." Levi muttered. Isabel didn't pay him attention she had already noticed me. She looked away.

"Isabel..." I tried to make her look at me. "So you're talking to me all of the sudden." I wanted to look at the floor, but I needed to look her in the eyes. "I'm sorry, sis." She looked at me. "Don't call me that." She sounded very hurt. "I really am. I've been treating you horribly. And you don't need to ever forgive me. But... I couldn't leave to this expedition without at least apologizing." I felt Levi's glare on me. I wanted to speak to him as well, but Isabel cut me off. "Never..." I felt my tears form. "...turn your back on us again! Do you hear me, sis?" She jumped and hugged me. I hugged her back, a few tears rolling down my cheeks. "I swear."

After few minutes we broke apart. I looked at Levi. "Levi..." He looked away. I held his hands. "Don't touch-" "Listen to me damn it!" He looked at me. His eyes were cold, but they had scared me once already, I wouldn't let it happen again. "I'm here! We don't have to be enemies. I would never let them get hurt! Do you hear me, Levi!" He stayed silent, but his hands wrapped around mine. "Do you swear, you will keep them save?" I looked in his eyes. "I swear."

We broke apart. It was time to get to the stabels, on the way Farlan joined us. I put my hand on his shoulder. "Take care of her for me." His eyes widened and he blushed. "I will."

So many promises were made that day. To stay together, to survive, to protect, to love. I hoped wih all my heart that none of them would be broken. Not today and not ever.

The ride to Shiganshina was long, but it felt like a blink of an eye to me. When we were at the gates of the town, they were opened for us by the same drunk soldiers I had known my whole life. Some of them recognized me. "Is that the daughter of Corporal (L/n)?" "That's her! She's a scout!?" "Of course she is, idiot! What did you think she left town for, become a maid?"

I never liked those soldiers too much, but now even they made me homesick. We rode in the streets, and passed so many familier places. The market, the backery, the church. The bells were once again ringing and the streets were full of people. I noticed Farlan, Isabel and Levi were looking at me. They knew I was from Shiganshina. I smiled at them. I looked at the crowd and recognized almost everyone, but they were all so changed... I saw one little boy with beautiful emerald eyes and brown hair, who was standing next to a beautiful girl around his age with black hair and eyes, who wore a red scar around her neck, and a cute boy with blond hair and blue eyes, who reminded me of Alice.

The boy looked so thrilled looking at all of us, that he reminded me of me, when I was little. His eyes stopped at me and I winked at him. A blush spread over his cheeks and I noticed the raven haired girl glaring at me. Quite a familier death glare if I must say. I glanced at Levi. And when I did... I saw them. My parents.

My dad had his hand around mum's shoulders, she was sobbing, while looking up at me. I felt I wanted to cry as well, but I shouldn't. I must show them I'm strong now. My eyes met thoes of my dad. He smiled proudly at me and I smiled back. When my mum looked up I saw she was smiling as well. They looked at Levi for some reason, then my dad and he nodded at each other.

To this day still can't figure out how did dad know...

We passed the crowd by and my small family reunion was over. I was happy I got to see them after three whole years. They looked well, I hoped they had a happy life. We reached the gates, which led out of the city. The final barrier between me and freedom. I held my breath and tried to calm myself down. But that was impossible.

"Let the 50th expedition beyond the walls begin!"shouted Commander Erwin and we stepped out of the walls.
