I was so glad Alex had mercy on me last night and didn't push me to spill the facts of the previous night. I had murmured something in between the lines of being too drunk and too tired to get into it. She let it go but she said I was gonna have to tell her at some point.
By then I was already laying down on her big fluffy bed and I felt her take off my shoes before I passed out.
When I woke up Alex was gone. I used her bathroom, showered and used her bathrobe to wrap myself before walking outside. I tiptoed towards the kitchen and found both Mrs. Hatford and my mother talking, drinking coffee and eating fruit.
"Good morning sunshine" my mother said cheerfully and came and hugged me. I wasn't exactly used to going around giving affection so I let her hug me and kinda tapped her back until she let me go. Awkward.
"Want some coffee?" Mrs. Hatford asked with a smile and I nodded.
"Yes please" I murmured and looked around for painkillers in all the cabinets until I found the precious bottle. After popping a couple in my mouth, I received the mug from her gratefully.
"Your father left with Richard to go golfing. Better that way, they both tend to get cranky and aggravating when they don't have a full night's sleep" Mrs. Hatford said, looking at my mom with a smile. I looked at the clock in the kitchen and saw it was almost noon.
"Oh my goodness, why didn't anybody wake me up? It's so late" I murmured, taking a sip from my coffee.
"Well honey, you looked like you needed the rest, so I didn't want to wake you up. Plus, we're in vacation, you're supposed to be relaxing" my mother said and I smiled a bit, but I'm sure it came out looking like a grimace.
"Where's everybody else?" I asked quietly.
"Well, Alex and that boy Oliver are at the beach. Andrew is God knows where, and Nate actually left this morning" Mrs. Hatford said and I put my mug down.
"Nate left?" I asked quietly, trying not to sound as alarmed as I felt. Mrs. Hatford smiled sadly.
"Yes, he said he had to go back to the office, so he left early morning after saying goodbye" she said, and I swallowed hard while giving them a quick smile.
I disappeared down the hallway, going to the empty room Andrew and I were going to sleep. He was nowhere to be seen, so I went and changed into shorts and a shirt, rummaging around to find my purse. No missed calls.
"Goddammit Nate" I went to my contacts trying to find his number. Dialing his line was more nerve-wracking than I thought possible, and it was worse when the call was sent to voicemail. I frowned and ended the call. What the hell? Was he ignoring me purposely?
Maybe he was in a meeting
He'll call back. I'm sure he will.
5 hours later
"He hasn't called back...." I murmured to myself, checking my phone for the millionth time.
"Huh?" Alex asked quietly without looking up from her magazine. She had convinced me to come down to the beach with her and tan for a bit. But it was way too hot, and I was way too anxious. Why would Nate leave me behind and now be ignoring me?
"Nothing" I murmured, closing my eyes under the blinding sun.
"Did my brother say bye to you when he left?" Alex conveniently asked. I tried to keep my expression neutral, but my ears perked up.
