"I'm never gonna get used to this." I told my best friend Maddie on the phone.
"You and I both know that the only reason why you don't want to study at Ellington College is because you didn't pick it yourself. I know your parents can be controlling at times but, dude! Ellington College? Even I would love to study there! Any girl would." Maddie replied.
"Does that mean I'm not a girl? I can't believe that I wasn't even given a chance to say where I wanted to go! No, I can't believe I actually thought that I could finally decide for myself now that I'm 16, but no, I guess I was wrong."
"And you wanted to go where?"
"Well, I wasn't really sure but.."
"Exactly. Even if you were, we both know that in the end, it's still going to be up to your parents." Maddie replied.
"Augh." I uttered.
"Well, you don't really have much of a choice. Just give it a chance. It's probably not going to be so bad, considering that it's one of the most prestigious schools in the country. Besides, you totally belong there." she insisted. "You can exchange Louis Vuitton bags and favorite designer clothes. Oh wait! Everyone's rich enough to buy anything anyway so why bother exchanging when you can buy new ones for each other?"
"Haha, very funny Madison Gale Gomez." I teased, trying to annoy Maddie since she's not very fond of her full name. Maddie was right though, I didn't have a choice. Every girl from my father and mother's side studied at Ellington College, I should've predicted this.
"Wow. I was just kidding, Princess Samantha Del Rey." Maddie uttered with a very annoying accent. "Seriously though, just go with it."
"Of course I'll go with it. It's not like I even had a chance to try out for another college. Ellington College is the only school that I would always hear about whenever college is brought up." I reached for Ellington's course catalog placed on one of my nightstands. "Good reputation, quality education, one of the biggest and most beautiful campuses in the country, not to mention it's accessible and safe location, and it's near the the best malls of Metro Manila. I guess it's not going to be so bad, not considering the fact that my parents have won again."
"They always do, and you may know it or not, but you always let them." Maddie confessed.
I sighed. ".. and just because you don't want them to keep controlling you, doesn't mean they're not right and they don't want what's best for you." Maddie continued.
"You're right Maddie, you always know what to say. I'm just a little bit anxious about the thought of college."
"Yes, even I am! Just remember that I'd still be your best friend no matter what happens during your stay at Ellington College, I will respect you and your decision, no matter how queer you turn out to be." Maddie teased.
"What?? ..Madison, what the hell!" We started laughing.
"Just kidding!" Madison giggled. "It's not like it isn't possible! Boys at Leighton Academy always kept you first in their lists, especially after your breakup with Dylan. What difference does it make when it comes to girls?" Maddie teased.
"You really are insane, Gale." I implied.
"Well, you know me very well!" Maddie added. "I must say though, you haven't been seeing anyone since Dylan. Your standards went sky rocket after your breakup. You've been turning down the most good looking guys that I've ever seen in my life." Maddie complained. "On the other hand, Dylan is quite the package. I guess I can't really blame you for that, he is a total dream boat."
"It's not like that at all Maddie, I'm just not into anyone right now. Besides, our breakup was kind of clean. We're still friends and we still talk. Not as often as before, but if there are chances we kind of do, and you totally know that." I replied.
"That's probably why you haven't found or looked for someone else, he's not only very handsome, he was also very nice wasn't he?"
"Yes. He was and he still is, but you know, what's over is over."
"You never really told me why you guys broke up."
"I-did. I told you, before.." I slightly stuttered.
"It was complicated? Really? I didn't bother asking you about it before because you seemed pretty upset, but it's been about three months and since I'm your best friend, you better explain to me what happened." Maddie demanded.
I kept quiet for a while, but I knew I had to say something. "After I get through first term."
"What? Would it matter if you told me now? Don't you trust me? I mean you said it yourself, what's over is over, so why not talk about it?" Maddie complained.
"I promise, I'll tell you after I get through the first term. I just need to.. feel my freedom.. and I just have to get used to college first. Just because we're friends and we still talk, doesn't mean that I still don't think about the things that happened.."
Maddie uttered an annoyed sigh. "Okay, fine. Only because I trust you, and I'm your best friend, and I care about you. You still have to tell me though! I'll count the days."
"Thanks, Maddie. You're the best!"
"I know, I know! Well, I was serious about me still accepting you if you ever turned queer." We both chuckled.
"I'm not sure though if you could still carry your red lipstick signature look if ever you really did turn into one." Maddie giggled.
"You think lesbians don't wear red lipstick?" A person started laughing from Maddie's side of the line.
"Stop eavesdropping Carl, don't you have other things to do besides annoy people and collect pornographic magazines?" Maddie shouted.
"Was that Carl?" I asked Maddie.
"Yes. Why did I have to have a fraternal brother? Why couldn't he have been my identical twin sister?" Maddie replied and started arguing with her brother.
I laughed. "Well, that's my cue. Maddie, I'll be home from Tagaytay tomorrow. You better pick me up along with the driver! I already asked my mom if you could go and come pick me up and she approved! I'm practically alone here anyway. My parents only had like three days of vacation so it's just me, Yuki and a few maids here."
"Really? Wow!" Maddie replied excitedly.
"Who knows maybe next year I could talk my parents into letting you stay here for summer too!" I declared.
"That sounds terrific Sam! See you tomorrow!" Maddie said eagerly.
