Leaving Tagaytay was always my mark of the end of summer. It means back to reality. All the short and few moments that I have shared with my family this year have become a memory.
"I better start packing my things for tomorrow." I stood up from my bed and started to gather my stuff.
I'm used my parents being away all the time. I would love to spend time with them but all they ever do is work anyway, so it's not big of a deal for me anymore. I grew up not being close to them, which is why I really don't like it when they try to control my life. I am used to it though, so they always get to make me do whatever they want me to.
I suddenly heard someone knock on my room's door. "Excuse me Ms. Samantha, weren't you looking for your guitar?"
"Yes Ethel, did you happen to find it? The black one?" I asked.
"Yes ma'am." She entered the room holding the guitar. "Thanks so much! Where did you find it?" I queried.
"It was in the guest room, miss."
"Oh right, Thanks again Ethel, I guess I better bring it back to Manila."
"May I help you pack your things miss?" Ethel asked.
"Yeah sure, everything's already there, I just need to put them in the bags. Please and thank you! I told Ethel. "Oh wait, I think I got a message." I brought my phone out of my pocket and saw a message from my mother's personal assistant.
Sheryl to Samantha: "Good day Ms. Samantha. Mrs. Del Rey wanted me to remind you to prepare for your return tomorrow. The car will arrive at 9am. You also have a spa appointment at 2pm, and before you leave, Mrs. Del Rey said you could also invite your friend Mandie over for lunch."
"I have a spa appointment?" I blurted out in confusion.
I immediately replied to thank her and ask about the spa appointment. Her reply said that it was "Mrs. Del Rey" who scheduled it for me. Who else?
"Ethel, do you think I have a bad complexion, or big pores, or dry skin?" I asked with a slightly irritated voice.
"No Ms. Samantha, your skin looks excellent and very healthy." Ethel answered.
"Then why do I have to go to the spa all the time? I used to think it was a place for relaxing, not painful facials and treatments." I ranted.
"Miss Samantha, maybe your mother is just doing what she thinks is best for you." Ethel shared with a shy and uncertain sounding voice.
I just looked at her and took a quick deep breath.
"She would always state how important it is to look good. I barely have time to see her, but whenever I do it's usually always during a gathering with other people. I remember that she would always come to my room before an event, and pick a jewelry for me, then compliments the dress she picked out for me to wear and whispers, Samantha, don't forget, always be second to perfection." I told Ethel and took a dive to lie down my bed. She gave me a sad look and continued to gather my things for tomorrow.
I decided to stay and lie down on my bed and saw my reflection in the mirror. I saw a petite girl with naturally wavy long hair dyed in the shade of medium blonde, her eyes are dark brown and thin almond shaped. She has noticeably cheek bones, cupid's bow lips and dimples on both sides of her face. I looked at the rest of her, and saw imperfections that she didn't want to see, that's why she knew that she was nothing special, and nowhere near perfection.
Before I was able to reply to Sheryl's text message, I received another text from her, "One more reminder Ms. Samantha, Mrs. Del Rey also wanted me to remind you that school starts in a week."
"How could I forget?" I muttered.
Samantha to Sheryl: Thanks Sheryl! My bestfriend's name is Maddie though, not Mandie, make sure that mom remembers this time okay? Thanks again!
