"Woodpool! You're finally here! We had been waiting for you!" Leafpaw shouted at her mentor as he padded towards her, Cinderleg and Petalpaw. "Can we begin training now?"
"Whatever," Woodpool grunted. "If Cinderleg agrees." I wondered who put dirt on his fresh-kill. Leafpaw wondered. He sounded just like an elder!
"Okay, let's start," Cinderleg meowed at the two apprentices. "What should we do?"
"Let's learn the stalking crouch," Woodpool replied. "You must take all your weigh into your haunches, so that your paws make no impact on the ground, try it."
Leafpaw and Petalpaw immediately tried to do a stalking crouch. Leafpaw reminded herself to take all her weight into her haunches, and was impressed that her paws made only a little impact on the ground. Taking light steps, she pretended to stalk a helpless prey.
"Good job, Leafpaw!" Woodpool complimented. "But put your tail low, so that prey won't see your tail, but not to low, so that your tail will not rustle the leaves and grass," Leafpaw lowered down her tail and saw Woodpool smiled, impressed.
"Yeah, good job, Leafpaw," Cinderleg mewed. "Petalpaw, place your weigh equally on your paws, and don't put all your weigh on your left paw."
"Whatever, kittypet mentor," Petalpaw muttered, just loud enough for Leafpaw to hear. Leafpaw sighed. Petalpaw was always so vulgar.
By then, the sun had already set. A golden glow could be seen on the edge of the sky, and stars were all begining to appear. The moon shone, brighter than ever.
"It's dark already," Cinderleg announced -looking at the two apprentices- "You two can go to the fresh-kill pile and each take a piece of prey while we go to the gathering."
Woodpool nodded and added, "But I don't think I'll be allow to go to the gathering."
"Yay!" Leafpaw meowed in delight as she sprinted to the fresh-kill pile. She chose a juicy-looking vole and gulped it down in a few mouthfuls. Licking her lips, she noticed Blossompaw gulping down a squirrel and she went forward to her.
"Hey Blossompaw! How's the medicine cat's duty?" Leafpaw asked excitedly as her sister glanced at her.
"Fine, Littleclaw reached me a lot about herbs," Blossompaw replied. "Horsetail for minor cuts. Cobwebs for cuts that are bleeding. Arrgh! There's so much to learn!"
"Calm down!" Leafpaw hissed, shocked at her sudden outbreak. "There's time for everything."
"But I'm not sure I'm worthy enough to be a medicine cat," Blossompaw mewed sadly. "Littleclaw is introducing me to Starclan next half-moon and I don't think Starclan will accept me. So much responsibility..."
"Don't worry, Blossompaw," Leafpaw replied. "Starclan will honour you."
"Really?"
"Really."
"Okay then, let's head to the apprentice den," Blossompaw said. "I think I could sleep for a moon!"
Leafpaw heaved a sigh of relief and said, "Okay, let's go."
They arrived at the apprentice den and realised that Petalpaw and Brownpaw were already asleep. Beside them, Ruthpaw, another apprentice that was older than them, was still awake.
"What? One day I am sleeping comfortably in this den alone. The next day I'm squeezed with four other cats!" Ruthpaw grumbled when she saw the two cats but there was a hint of amusement in her voice.
"It will be three when half-moon comes," Blossompaw mewed. "I'll be moving to the medicine cat den then."
"Well that's good. Good night!" Ruthpaw meowed and immediately snoring could be heard from her.
Leafpaw stifled a mrrow of amusement and she laid on the moss. Sleep came crashing to her like a black wave.
