There were a few days left until the Christmas holiday and the lessons carried on as usual.That day though,Brandon was feeling terribly worried.He was feeling like he was burning inside,the minutes were not passing by.When the bell finally rang for break time,everyone stood up from their seats and Alex was talking with Sam.After a while,Brandon couldn't wait any longer and told her they had to talk in the library.She immediately knew that something was going on.As soon as they walked into the library and made sure they were alone,he talked to her.
-Something is not right,he told her.He was very nervous.Then,his gaze fell upon the necklace she was wearing on her neck.-The pendant!I should have known!Why did you wear it?Don't you know it's dangerous?Take it off now!,he yelled at her.
-Dangerous?Why?,she asked scared.
-It's made of moonstone.It's like a magnet for us werewolves.Its energy attracts us and we feel its presence.Only witches wear it...We have to leave now before they find you!,he explained to her as fast as he could,held her hand and they ran to the exit.
Quite some time before all that happened,Lana went to Alex's room to tidy up.There,she saw on her desk the box in which the pendant was kept,empty.She realised her granddaughter had wore it that morning before she went to school.
-No,not that!,she said upset and ran downstairs to call Joseph.She couldn't handle this all alone.
-Joseph,we have to go to the school immediately!Alex wore the pendant!
-What?How could you let her?,he was yelling outraged.
-I did not know!We don't have time for this!Let's go before it's too late!
-You are not going anywhere.It's time for me to take over,he stopped her and hang up the phone.
His words made Lana regret she asked for his help,but she knew herself she wasn't as strong as she was younger.They wouldn't hesitate to attack her,whereas no one would dare attack Joseph.No one was that strong.But then what?She was afraid that his reaction would be harsh and all of them would have to face the consequenses.And Alex most of all.
-It's too late.They're already here,Brandon said.He could feel the presence of his "brothers" around the school.They were lurking like crowls that wait for their pray to die.
-Now what?,Alex asked him.
-I will distract them.When you find the chance,leave from the back door and run as fast as you can to your house.After a while they won't be able to follow you if you go from the main road,Brandon told her.
-No,I will not leave you alone.I'm sure there is way I can leave among the other kids,she suggested.She wasn't gonna let him face them alone.
-It's too risky.I can't jeopardize them seeing your face.As long as you wear that thing you are a target.
-No!I'm not leaving you!
-Listen to me.I will be fine,he said calmly and caressed her hair.
Then,suddenly,they heard a man yelling at them.His voice was very familiar to Alex.
-Keep your hands off her and don't you dare touch her again,he said to them.
It was Joseph who then pulled her away from Brandon furious.
-Uncle!,she said dazed.He was the last person she expected to see right now.
-All I want is to protect her,sir,Brandon said.
-I think you've done enough!If you ever come near her,talk to her or even dare to think of her,you're gonna have to deal with me,Joseph warned him while Alex was trying to hold him back so he wouldn't attack Brandon.
-Uncle,we have to go right away!,Alex said to put an end to this stupid fight.
-Give me the necklace,Joseph said to her.
-Why?
-I said give it to me!I'll deactivate its power so his dogs won't be able to trace it,he answered ironically.
Brandon looked at him angrily and made a step towards him,but Alex stopped him.She gave the necklace to Joseph unwillingly and with one move it lost its shine.
-Let's go,he said after giving it back without even looking at her.
As he was looking at Alex walk away,a fear overcame him that he wouldn't see her again.She was feeling so weak,as if she was sinking in every step.She kept looking back as his image was fading.She saw some blurry figures approaching him and stopped.She was about to go back, but Joseph wouldn't let her.
-Don't you dare,he threatened her.-And don't worry.They would never hurt the son of their Lord.We are not that lucky.
As soon as they arrived home,Joseph was enraged.He was screaming and blaming Lana for not warning his niece not to wear the pendant and put her life in danger and forbid Alex to see the werewolf again.Even though she opposed and told him he had no right to involve in her life and tell her what to do,there was no point.He was adamant.He would do what should have been done since the beginning,he answered her.She would go live with him until she forgets about Brandon.She went to her room tired.There,she saw Lana putting some of her clothes inside a suitcase.
-What are you doing?I can't believe you'll just let me go with him,just like that!,Alex said angry.
-What do you want me to do?He's right.It's my fault.I allowed you to be with Brandon,I didn't tell you about the necklace,they almost catch you today because of me!It's my fault!,Lana yelled with her eyes teared up and bursted into crying.
Alex sighed.She hugged her and tried to calm her down.
-It's not just your fault.I should have thought better of the consequences.I'll go with him for a while until things get better and then I'll come back,she told her.-But he can't tell me not to think of Brandon,not to need him...He can't do that...I'm in love with him...
-I know,dear...I know...
In the evening,she said goodbye to her grandma,closed the door of her house behind her and followed Joseph to his car.
