The next morning,Alex woke up with the light hurting her eyes.When they adjusted,she saw Joseph standing in front of the window.She tried to get up but it was impossible,so she leaned on the back of the bed.
-You are a lot like your mother,you know...,her uncle said to her and smiled.She couldn't remember the last time she saw him smile.-Smart,dynamic,stubborn,especially that.Everyone loved her because she cared for all,he continued.He turned around to look at her.She was listening carefully.
-I'm not like her at all...I've let everybody down,she said with a sadness covering her eyes.
-You have much more in common that you think,though.Same voice,same eyes,same kindness for everyone...same look everytime I let you down...,Joseph answered and sat next to her.-I'm sorry for everything I said.Your life was in danger because of me,he said and held her hand.
-It's not your fault.I shouldn't have gone to the forest the moment I knew they were hunting there.
-And I should have never let you leave the house,he admitted.-The moment I learned that my sister was dead was one of the worst of my life.Of course,I didn't know I would live many like this since then.If something had happened to you I could never forgive myself.Never.
-But I'm here.Alive.You don't have to be so hard on yourself,she appeased him.
-Yes...,he answered and smiled.
These were the exact words his sister used to tell him.She always believed he was too harsh and unfair to himself.There was silence between them for a while.
-He is not like them,Alex said when she referred to Brandon at last.-Please don't hurt him,I'm begging you.
-Perhaps he isn't.Listen.There are a lot of things we haven't told you because we thought we would protect you,but I think it's time tο know.My wife,Jasmine,was accused of killing the Lord of the Werewolves,Philip,who was Leonard's brother.There were no serious proves,but someone had to be punished.So they condemned her to death.And they burned her,Joseph narrated.The memories were emerging in front of his eyes.He was reliving those horrible moments.-There you go...now you know how everything started.
-I can't believe this...
-Everything happened so fast...there's not a day that passes by that I don't think I didn't do enough to save her.She was my happiness...my sunshine....,he answered and his eyes glowed in the thought of his wife.He would give anything to see her smile again.
-We are cursed...,Alex said desperate and lowered her head.
-Maybe we are.But you know what?Everytime I look at my daughter and you ,I believe there's hope for a better future,he tried to encourage her,though Alex still seemed very skeptical.-Try to understand,he said.He gave her a kiss on the forehead and left.
They had never talked like that before.Alex had never felt him so close.His wife's death in such a cruel and unfair way,explained a lot.However,there were so many questions that hadn't been answered yet.If Jasmine wasn't the one who killed Lord Philip,then who was it?
A couple of days later,after many disgusting beverages that Lana gave her by force,and without ever telling her what they contained -even though she wasn't so sure she wanted to know- Alex was able to walk again.
The third day,even though she was limping,she convinced her grandma it was time to go to school again.Or at least that's what she intented to do if she hadn't sneaked out of the house that morning.When she walked through the door of the school,she felt a great joy and exitement overwhelming her.
She really wanted to see her best friend after all this time...and Brandon,to be honest,but she knew he wasn't there.His absence was so powerful that everything seemed silent.As if music had disappeared from this world.Funny,isn't it?
She saw Sam talking to Seth.She walked towards her and as soon as Sam saw her,a huge smile was spread on her face and immediately hugged her.When they let one another,Alex looked at Seth.
-Hi Seth,she greeted him.
-Bye Seth,Sam added.
-Yes...I've got some stuff to do...you know what's like...concerts,rehearsals,tours...so tiring...,he answered with the style of a famous rock star,since he got the message right away,and left.
-He's not that bad after all,Alex said as he was watching him distance.Sam looked at her shocked.-And if you tell anyone I said that,I'll deny it and say you're crazy,she added in a very serious way and then smiled.
They were walking towards the bench,when Sam noticed that Alex was walking strangely,even though she was trying to hide it.
-What happened?,she asked worried.
-I'm fine,it's nothing.I just hit my leg a bit,she reassured her.
-I know that there's something you don't want to tell me,but I won't push you any further.You'll tell me when you're ready,Sam told her.
-One day I'll tell you everything,Alex promised her.
-You've changed...,she answered,trying to smile.
-Perhaps...but can you love whatever it is that I am now?,she asked with a small concern.
-You haven't changed that much after all,otherwise you wouldn't be asking me that.I'll always love you,you silly!,she said and gave her a big,warm hug.
