All was normal. In fact, Amé had returned home, to Seattle, since her semester started a little early than Ina's. The sisters remained in contact by FaceTime and texting, since they were little girls, dreaming of a day they'd only be a block away from each other. But that seemed more complicated than usual, for Amé attended the University of Washington in Seattle, and Ina NYU University. The distance hadn't changed anything. Actually, it only made their time together more special.
Everything was back to normal. Ina had a side job at the coffee shop in Barnes and Nobles, her favorite place in the entire world, where she'd raid the bookshelves and dream of a day where she'd step in a room of her own books. It wasn't her job, she could work at home and was only required to travel in certain occasions, but she loved being surrounded by the smell of coffee and books. It was what got the sisters to meet anyways, books.
"Tell me," Samantha said, her green eyes bright and alert. She too was a mug-and-book type of girl, witty, and unlike most readers, an extrovert. "Tell me everything."
Ina smiled at her, a shy smile she tried to contain. Samantha had made peace with Ina's strange behavior patterns: cold but affectionate, joyful but calm, a skinny girl with beastial eating habits– it is why she still worked in Barnes and Nobles.
"It was insane," Ina began, her eyes shifting from one place to another, gathering her thoughts. "You remember Jake?"
"Your boy-toy?"
Ina told her everything except Jake's death. She told her the details, she told her about the crush she had on this criminal, and how everything was the most exciting, and happy she's been. Because, as she spoke, she didn't need to say it, but her accent strengthened, her eyes lit up, and she smiled, wide and bright. Samantha expected a proposal ring, but instead, she was left on the saddest ending. They'd never speak again.
"I'm not ready for love," Ina shook her head. "But... I'm not sad."
Samantha stared at her like she was crazy. Who wouldn't be sad? To walk away from their possible soulmate?
"It was the most beautiful night of my life," and she took a deep breath like her lungs had never inhaled before. "I am thankful and happy it happened."
"But it could happen again."
Ina shook her head, her smile gone. Now her eyes held a blank stare. Denial? Refusal?
"What if... if I see him again... and he's not what I imagine him to be?"
Samantha didn't know what to say. She never thought of it that way. But Ina did. Ina put Ivaan Adinov on a pedestal, on an almighty throne of the best man she's ever met and she didn't want to ruin that. She didn't want to ruin that idea she made under 24 hours, and know again no man is a good man.
So Samantha let it go. Because Ina had a right to be scared. Samantha too, has not met a good man. In fact, she's seen more unicorns than nice men.
