Chapter 15: A Night to Remember

Me and Lilac had planned to spend the next day together. She heals my bruises and we decide to go to breakfast. The day is mostly uneventful until I sense a presence behind us. I turn around to see Tyrian in a back alley next to a drink stand. "Hey I'm gonna get something to drink, you want something?"

"Water, please."

"Alright I'll be back, you go ahead to the street show without me." She nods and runs off. I walk over to the drink stand and duck in the alley behind it. "Hello Aries, my old friend!" Tyrian chimes in an almost lyrical way.

"We're not friends. Anyway, what are you doing here?"

"Aw, now, Aries. Can't a guy skulk in the darkness for no reason?" I intensify my glare and he groans. "Well her godliness has a task for you. You see, we're making a move to obtain some intel tonight. We need you to keep an eye on the guests and notify someone if something's up." I wish I could refuse him, me and Lilac have been looking forward to this for a while. "Get yourself another cronie. I can't possibly monitor that many minds at once." I go to turn away but he slinks over and puts his tail up to my chest. "Well lucky for you, we already have some of interest we'd like you to monitor." He grins a crooked grin hands me a list of names. "Even if I wanted to, my semblance has a quirk." My eyes shift colors as I link minds with him. "My eyes always change when I link minds with someone. Everyone has already learned this quirk so it is pretty identifiable." His crooked grin turns into a twisted scowl. "Get out of my head!" Now I have the high ground. "What's wrong, Tyrian? Don't like me in your head?"

"Back off! Back off!"

"Barking like a mad dog. Maybe someone should put you down!" I form a blade from psychic energy and hold it to my side. I start to walk toward him and he continues to cower back. He backs into a dumpster and I continue to walk forward. "You wouldn't slay me in front of your girl, would you?" I question what he means and I turn around. Lilac's standing in the opening of the alley. The sword dissolves and my eyes shift back. "Lilac! I'm...how long have you been standing there?"

"I heard shouting and came running." I hear crashing and turn around to see him gone. I go to chase him when Lilac grabs my hand. "What were you doing back here?"

"He tried to mug someone, I stopped him and was going to scare him a bit so he wouldn't try it again." She looks up at me with an angry look. "Aries! What has gotten into you?"

"It's" I try to explain but it just ends in a sigh. "Nevermind, let's just get outta here." She notices my change in attitude and stops me. "Aries, are you alright? You can talk to me." Looking into her eyes I can't let her worry or come up with another lie. I gently kiss her on the cheek and turn around. "I'm fine. C'mon we're gonna miss the show."

The boys go to the JNPR dorm to change while Pyrrha and Nora come here to get into their dresses. "I suppose you and Ren are going together, Nora?" Yema asks with a sly grin. "Y...yeah, but not like, together together. We're just friends. It would just be weird otherwise, right?" Me and Yema share a glance and laugh. Wasn't too awful long ago I stuttered the same way talking about Aries. "Hey, what's so funny?!" Nora angrily exclaims. "Nothing, Nora. Nothing." Yema says through laughs. We all finish getting ready and just sit on the beds and wait for the dance to start. "Aries sure is lucky, Lilac. You look stunning." Pyrrha compliments me and I blush. I'd like to say I'm excited but something is seriously bothering me about Aries. Yema seems to pick up on this but doesn't say anything. "Hey, Nora why don't you go get us some pre dance drinks. Pyrrha go and make sure she doesn't drink them all. Aries says the machine was acting up so it might need Nora's brand of "tough love."" The two nod and leave. "Lilac, are you okay?" Yema asks calmly.
