it was sad waking up to no text messages from your boyfriend. you still really liked jinyoung but all you wanted was a little attention from your boyfriend. jinyoung became so distant that even you felt alone and lonely. there wouldn't be much of a difference if you were still single.
but something was still stopping you from breaking up with him.
"prove it then, date her then, show me you can, let's see whether she will come crying to me after 2 months. jinyoung, don't force yourself into a relationship when you can't treat a girl properly."
that sentence that jinyoung's father said at the dinner table on that day rang in your ears and you sighed upon remembering what he said.
you: may i go over? i need to talk to you.
jinyoung: of course, you didn't have to ask, you know?
you: sorry, i just wanted your permission
---
and with that, you walked over to his house.
once you reached, you knocked on his door again but it took him ages to greet you at the door.
"sorry, i had something to do,"
"it's fine," you assured and he pulled you in again, making sure you didn't have to stay in the cold any longer.
"what's up?" he asked while grabbing a drink for you.
"oh, u-uh," you weren't sure whether you should bring up the matter because you found yourself childish thinking about it the moment you stepped into jinyoung's house. clearly he still cared about you so you thought that he might have been busy with something and that you were just overthinking.
"what's wrong?" he asked again.
"hm? nothing,"
"but you said you needed to talk to me about something. sounded serious as well, everything okay?" he rested his arm around your shoulder to show you that you could tell him anything.
"i think i should be the one asking you this instead actually," you spoke and he shot you a questioning stare.
"i don't know, you seem a bit, distant?" you looked down at your feet, not sure if you should continue talking about it or let him be.
"oh, have i? sorry. did i not give you enough attention?" he planted a soft kiss on your cheek, "i'll try harder."
"no, i just want you to tell me what's wrong. are you okay?" you asked and looked at him.
he sighed before he started apologizing, "i'm sorry, i know i've been distancing myself and i'm sorry in advance for whatever you're about to hear."
whatever he said sent a shiver down your spine but you sighed, preparing yourself for whatever he was about to say.
"so remember my ex?" he paused for a while to check your reaction, then debating on whether he should stop before he hurts you or anything.
"yeh," you signaled for him to continue.
"she called me and asked me to meet her recently," and he paused again.
"no, don't pause, i know i'll cry if you keep pausing to check up on me," you said, eyes already watering.
jinyoung got really flustered and quickly hugged you, "no, please don't cry."
"are you gonna continue?"
"do you want me to? will you be okay?" he asked, worry written all over his face.
you nodded as you wiped the tears that had just fallen.
"i won't go into detail but, i really wanted to give her a second chance. i know i'm being selfish but if i do give her a second chance, maybe my father will finally see that i wasn't in the wrong," he started tearing up, "i really want my father to know that she was the one who lied back then. i'm hoping he'll feel at least the slightest bit sorry but i just wanted him to know i didn't do anything to hurt my ex."
he stopped to wipe your tears, "i know i'm being selfish by doing this and i'm not putting myself in your shoes but i really don't want to give up this opportunity."
you nodded, not being able to say anything. he pulled you into his embrace as you cried in his arms for the last time.
"but you know i still really love you right?" he released and looked at your watery eyes.
you sighed, not sure how to answer that question.
"i guess you don't know how much i love you, well, i'm telling you, i still really love you and i'm really sorry."
you nodded again, calming yourself down before asking him, "then why have you been acting so distant?"
"i needed time to think about it, i didn't want to hurt you but i ended up doing exactly what i didn't want to," he sighed, "are you okay?"
"i really can't do much about it, can i?" you chuckled, realizing how useless you are, "but as your.. ex, i have to understand where you're coming from and i am really happy that your father might get the right idea now."
you flashed him a fake smile to show him that you're genuinely happy for him. you stood up from his sofa and was about to leave when he stopped you.
"but i do want to thank you for everything. thank you for understanding, thank you for listening to my problems, thank you for taking care of me even when i was rude to you. thank you for helping me see the brighter side of life. i was a horrible person to you and to everyone when i first met you, but thanks to you, i'm a happier person now. thanks to you, i've changed from a pessimistic person to an optimistic person. i don't know how you did it, but i'm really grateful for that."
you flashed him yet another fake smile with tears trickling down your face again.
"thank you for mending this broken heart of mine."
