Chapter 17: Pandora
I remember the guards that had escorted me from the captain’s tent catching me, but the rest was foggy. The message, clear as day, only it hurt like hell. They must have caught me, because I don’t remember hitting the ground either. I sit up, rather clumsily, only to be pushed back down. I give one of my icy glares and the guards shrink back a little, wusses. Someone is afraid of a pregnant girl that is in the hospital tent…utter pups!
“What happened?” I ask, my voice scratchy.
“You just collapsed, but we think we know the cause.” One of them says.
“I do too. Please tell me I’m not crazy, but I just heard like a voice…in my head.”
“So it really is true! Thank the stars that guide us they’re safe!” I wince at the volume and look at him like he’s the crazy one.
“Okay, skip to it or you’ll be in this bed instead of me,” I growl.
“Well, that voice must have been Zane trying to contact you mentally. What did he say?” The other guard glares at the younger one who had jumped up; apparently it was informal to call him by his first name.
“He said something about…the Volddin and being captured. Is he going to be okay?” I notice now them going deathly pale, their symbols a wide range of colors.
I snap my fingers, “Boys? Are they okay or do I need to go get them?”
“No, no, no, no, no! Absolutely not, you cannot go get them, even if not in your current state.”
“Let me get this straight. I have to wait here while you go rescue the morons without me. Correct?”
“Correct.” The older guard says.
“What’s your name soldier?” I need to try the charming approach it seems.
“Jae’tel…” He says confused, but with a little bit of shyness. I know my affects on people well, and this was going as planned.
“Jae’tel, at least let me help your plans to go rescue them. It’s the least I could do, after all you did catch me before I fell in the dirt…” My voice comes off alluring, and I think I even see the younger one staring at me with his mouth open. What, is a hard-working girl difficult to find out here?
I-I…I-I’m sorry…but we um…have to alert our superiors of this.” I nod at Jae’tel before glancing at the younger one.
“Your name?”
“Ter’al, but you can call me Ter.”
“I’d be happy to, as long as you pass this along.” I hand him a piece of paper with writing on it. My letter to their captain, whom I had made…friends with, you could say.
They look at the letter with shock. Did they think I couldn’t write?
“You are very forward with our Captain.” The way they say his title makes him seem like some sort of fiery demon that took control of their ship. I contain the obnoxious laugh that wants to come out of me and smirk.
“Honesty is a key virtue, if you guys have Bonds make sure to be honest. Or they’ll kick your ass, women can smell fear boys, as well as lies.” I feel kind of bad that they actually believed me, but think better of it. Maybe they’ll finally stop treating us like delicate flowers. I mean some are, but not all of us.
I sit in the bed with boredom. There is only so much drawing you can do of medical monitors and the little shrub outside the window. Sighing, I finish my detailed drawing and sit up fully. Making sure no one can push me back down, I get up slowly. I hate sitting down all day, it makes me feel weird, and besides. I hate hospitals, even tiny tent ones. They freak me out. I feel that feeling of being watched and turn around quickly to see a very worried Jade.
She hugs me so tightly that I can only grunt. “You’re squeezing out my innards as we speak, Jade.” She giggles, but let’s me go, retreating back to Jett.
“All is fine, and call the doctor to say otherwise and I’ll get you too.” Pouting, I stand next to Jade and Jett, forcing my way between them. “Now, can I get out of here?”
“You still hate hospitals don’t you?”
“Same as ever, how could you not remember why?”
“I remember, but they don’t really seem all too scary…” She smirks a little while I give her my ‘death glare’.
“Why are you fearful of medical attention? I mean surely Zane must know of that or he would not take you so often.”
“Long story short, they just…give me this foreboding sense, maybe shivers. Ever since I was little, I mean my mom used to be a nurse and everything, maybe that’s why.”
“Oh, well I will aware Zane.”
“Don’t you dare, alien boy. I’ll tell him myself!”
“Alien boy? Where did your talent at insults go?” Jade giggles, but hugs Jett’s shoulders, making me give them an ‘aww’ before her glare silences me. Don’t worry, Jade and me do that all the time, sometimes it’s more endearing than it looks.
The day went on with me sneaking out of the medical facility, and spending the day with Jade and Jett. Which is no small feat, I swear they’re always moving around. I just don’t know how she does it, but I’m not complaining. Go distractions! I mentally slap myself when Jade shoos me off though, I knew she needed some alone time with him. Not ever will I stop that, as long as she doesn’t do PDA in front of me I’ll be fine. I mean they are some cute things couples will do, but sometimes seeing someone kissing another with their tongue isn’t going to make your day. Unless of course you’re into that sort of thing…
Making my way to my lonely room in the new colony wings, I push the door panel, but find it already open. I see a small form on the bed, and gasp out loud. It’s a kid, like a full Corillian child!
“Why are you in my bed, shouldn’t you be at home?” I ask, making my voice tender and soft. I love children, although they can still be quite annoying, not to mention smelly, wet, loud. The list goes on.
She gives a little kitten yawn before opening her eyes. “This isn’t my room, is it? Oh noes, mommy is going to be so mad!” I giggle at her attitude.
“Not your fault, all these tents look the same. Tell me who your mom is, maybe we can find her.”
“You are Panda, right?” I look back at her in shock; please tell me she isn’t reading my mind right now.
“Hey, you can call me Cass. But my mom says if I get lost you can just drop me off in front of the Captain’s office…if I can find it.”
“Chill. I know where it is, but I am a little curious as to how you got in here.” The child, Cass, looks at me in horror before running off, her symbols turning a flash of colors.
I make my bed that she slept in, and cuddle up on Zane’s bed. I snuggle, but find something near the end of the bed and pick it up. I pick up a small piece of metal in my hands and open the little thing. The thing is like a locket, with a picture of me (that I didn’t know he took) and the older guard from earlier, Jae’tel. Sagging my shoulders, I hold it in my hands, falling asleep to the sound of the colony lights humming.
