Chapter 5: Pandora
I shift my position in the bed, remembering that I’m on a ship far away from home. I smell a mint fragrance on the blanket I seemed to have woken up with, and turn to my side. Looking out the window, I see the Milky Way, so beautiful with its swirling colors. The view doesn’t calm me; after all, there was no Earth to see it from. I stand quietly, not noticing the person behind me. I turn around briefly to see only half of his face, if he was a he after all, illuminated in the dark. It’s like he’s almost glowing. Which is cool, and kind of freaks me out. I want to yell at him, scream, and kick my way out of here, but where is there to go? Out into space, one, I’d die, and even though I’m sure they have escape pods, how would I ever get to one? What would I have to do, stab him? Something tells me that he’s much stronger than I am because I remember the pain when I crashed into him. If he was in fact male.
He just stood there, so I ignore him and continue my sweeping gaze through the window. I hear light footsteps, and feel the air move slightly where he stands next to me. Just standing, I want to move, but his movements are so strange, so alien, that I must stay. He doesn’t seem to be doing much of anything, so I look him over. He has dark black hair, markings all over his body, which go from the bottom of his jaw to I’m guessing a trail though his body that leads to his ankles, and his eyes seem to be green. But I realize that if his markings change color, surely his eyes do too, and even though I despise him deeply, I still blush when he notices me looking.
“You don’t have to be afraid of me you know.” He says, still turned to the window.
“Really, I don’t? You’re obviously much stronger than I am, and perhaps smarter, despite the fact that I don't want to admit it.” His expression softens, much to my annoyance.
“If you knew this, why did you attack me?” He asks, question in his eyes
“You took Jade…” My words tumble out of my mouth.
“Actually no, Jett did. The one that was standing next to her.”
“Why? Why her?”
“She was chosen.”
“But why choose her?”
“I didn’t choose her, ask Jett.” He remains silent afterward, and stares into some far off place.
“Why’d you choose me?” I ask, he looks shocked I would ask.
“I’m not sure…” He said, looking through the window.
“That's a terrible answer you know.”
“I don’t have a better one.” He sighs and walks toward a beeping monitor, which he types in a conversation.
I want to learn more about this place, and being ignorant isn’t going to ultimately help me later. I walk up to him, and he just nods with a smile on his face. Clearly part of some sick joke, but I just tap his shoulder.
“Yes Pandora?”
“Um, what is that?” I ask, pointing to the screen he was typing on.
“It’s called a monitor, and we use them for daily duties we have to preform.” He said, clearly not wanting to discuss more to distract him from his duties.
“What are your duties? And what are you doing on your monitor?” I ask, which just makes me receive a long sigh.
“I’m sliver ranking, which in translation would mean I’m a lieutenant commander in your language. And I’m doing status reports on my findings, as well as you.” He turns back to the screen, not angry or annoyed, but just…neutral. He made this situation unreal for me; he also made it seem like no big deal. I mean, his entire existence is a lie. I just want to pinch myself and wake up, tell Jade my dream and have her laugh. I want this all to be just a dream. Just a dream, a nightmare even, one that I’ll wake up from with cold sweat and a thundering heartbeat.
