Chapter 21: Pandora
I motion for the captain to give me a moment alone and I give Tallik a look. Both walk ahead, giving Zane and I some space.
“Hey,” I say, looking at his angry red eyes.
“I told you not to do anything reckless on my behalf. Do you know what I would have done if you got hurt, if our children got hurt?”
I move closer to him, or at least as close as I can get with a humongous pregnancy belly. I slap him, hard, but I think I hurt my hand more than his face.
“That. Is for being a moron and getting kidnapped,” I say, glaring, “but this, is for being safe and sound,” and I grab his face and kiss him full on the mouth.
“Wha-,” he begins, but I break him off.
“I like how you care, but we can argue later. Now come.” I motion for him to come forward and walk with me, despite his burning glare in the captain’s back, and my gun.
I like the gun though; it stuns people. Plus, it’s all futuristic and cool looking. I also like the armor, although it obviously wasn’t made for pregnant people, more like buff alien dudes who don’t joke around. In a matter of minutes, we make it back to camp, but everybody is asleep. Or, at least people who don’t have nightshift.
“Pandora, you’ll be alright?”
“Yes, Jae’tel. I’ll bring him for a checkup tomorrow, after we talk.” He nods and personally escorts that Tallik guy to the Medical Bay.
I begin the long, and mostly silent, walk back to our quarters, and try not to cringe at his eyes. I mean I’m sorry, but red eyes are really creepy looking on Zane. In no time, thank god, we arrive at the door, and he slides his hand over the panel. I lock the door behind him, and wait for the long speech about my safety to come. But, it doesn’t come.
“Pandora, you’re…one of kind. You put yourself in danger,” he begins, but I cut him off.
“Please, not the long speech about my safety. Being pregnant isn’t a disability, so don’t treat it as one.” I give him a pointed glare, and almost to a victory dance when his eyes change back to regular color.
“How did you do it, convince the Captain?”
“Oh, Jarek? I annoyed the hell out of him. I think I almost made him cry.”
“How? That man has been through countless battles and…”
“Zane, I sang show tunes, off-key I might add, to him through his very sensitive pointy ears. What a big baby, my singing isn’t that bad.”
I hear his chuckle and smile; finally, his red eyes are gone. “So, to bed?”
“Yes, to bed. I’ll finally be warm. You’re like a space heater, and of course these monsters will stop kicking.”
“I love you, Pandora,” he says, kissing me, and my stomach.
I get into bed, and try not to stare too much as he changes into his sleeping clothes. Luckily, he doesn’t see me staring, or else he might attack me with those…smoldering eyes of his. The bed shifts to the left, and he slips in next to me.
“Zane, I missed you.”
“Me too,” he says, kissing my forehead. Then, Zane cuddles into me, almost making a purring type noise.
