Chapter Thirteen

• Gwen •

What?

Gabriel sat up straighter, his brows knitted together in awareness and confusion. Andy stirred, lifting her head from his shoulder. She was on the brink of dosing off, but feeling the sudden alertness coming off of Gabe made her sit up.

“You okay?”

He ignored her, looking straight ahead. I wanted to reach forward and brush away the lines that creased on his forehead. His mind was churning with possibilities; all the while calling my name, asking me what I meant.

“Gwen. It isn’t wise.”

I turned my gaze from Gabriel to Kaed. He crouched down, meeting me at eye level. His blue eyes were intense as he took my hand in his.

“I know. But what am I supposed to do? I’m supposed to protect him, give him advice – but I can’t point him in the right direction? His mind is still fragile with what that creature did to him, Kade! He doesn’t remember yet, and recalling those events will help them get to Cal on time.”

Haven, I know you’re there. Please, tell me.

“It’s not your call, Gwen. He will remember when the time comes.”

“It might be too late when that happens!”

I snatched my hand from his grasp, only to see a flash of hurt flicker across his features. “We can’t interfere. You know the rules.”

Screw the rules, I thought. That’s what I wanted to say to Kaed. He had to understand what I was trying to say, what I was trying to prevent. If the Master…if he got his hands on Cal…

“We’re supposed to warn our charges. That’s what I’m trying to do. Can’t you see that, Kaed?”

He pushed himself up, snaking his fingers through his hair as he muttered some words underneath his breath. His steps were rapid, meticulous as he paced back and forth. I watched him like I was viewing a tennis match. The muscles in his jaw tightened and relaxed as he mulled over a plan. He was a fierce and powerful celestial warrior, always strategizing and calling on his divine power to see what the future held. There were instances where I felt inadequate to be in his presence. I was just a guardian angel, while he was a soldier from Heaven. But Michael had discharged him to me for some unknown reason.

Whatever it was, I was grateful for it. Without Kade I wouldn’t have been able to adapt to the blessing I’d been given. I would have probably broken the first rule in the book as soon as I discovered that I was going to be Gabriel’s guardian.

Haven?

Guilt washed over me as I ignored Gabriel’s pleas. As quietly as he could muster, Gabe told Andy that I was here, telling her of all that I had said – which was one sentence that had piqued his interest. I gnawed at my lip, my eyes flickering back and forth between Kade and Gabriel.

“She’s still here,” Gabe said. “I can feel her here…but I don’t know…”

“Maybe she can’t say?” Andy offered. “She’s a being from Heaven. I imagine that they have their own rules to abide by as we do.”

I smiled. I couldn’t have been anymore grateful for Andy as I was at that very moment. She was intuitive, caring, sweet – if I was still alive I would have immediately been her friend.
