What happened? - the first thing that went in my mind when I made the mistake of moving myself. Every single inch of my body hurt and I felt something pinching my left hand.

I also made the mistake of opening my eyes, a bright light hurting them. After blinking repeatedly my eyes finally adjusted and I took in my surroundings. It was a hospital room, the ticking of my heartbeat making it obvious. The pinching on my left hand was probably medicine or something else, I had no idea. Besides, why would I even be at a hospital?

As I tried to get myself in a sitting position, feeling my body aching again, a nurse walked in.

“Sweetie, you can’t handle that much effort!” she ran to my bed, pushing me softly until I was laying down again. “You’re not completely recovered from the accident yet.”

Accident? Oh, God.

Images from the truck colliding against our car and sending it rolling several times until it stopped flashed through my mind.

“How’s Lynn?” I squealed, the beep of my heartbeat going into a frenzy.

“She’s okay… Uhm…” she looked down to a paper in her hands. “Heloise, right?”

“Yeah, Heloise.”

“I’m June and I’ve been taking care of you.”

“How long have I been asleep for?”

“Almost two days.”

I widened my eyes in shock. Almost two days?

“Is there anyone here?”

“Your aunt was conscious after the accident and she gave us your mom’s number. Visiting hour’s over so she went home.”

“Oh.”

“I’m going to let the doctor know you’re awake and then bring you some food, alright? Don’t try to sit.” she smiled warmly, walking out the door.

“Thanks, I’m really hungry.” I laughed, my right hand flying over to my stomach.

That was when I realized. What about the baby? She didn’t say anything about the baby, what was that supposed to mean? That the child was ok, or the other way around?

I sank in the soft pillow, feeling and hearing my heart beating out of pace.

“Good afternoon, Ms. Heloise.” a tall, middle-aged man got in with a file in his hands.

“Good afternoon.” I mumbled almost sarcastically.

“I’m doctor Colin, how are you feeling right now? I see your heart’s beating fast.” he said, eyes on the monitor beside me.

Oh, really?

“I’m nervous. You know I’m pregnant…”

“I’ll get there. First, I need to check you to see how you’re doing. You’ve been unconscious for a long time.” he stepped closer and started doing several tests. After a few minutes, he finally seemed satisfied. “You’re great, I was actually worried but you’ll be fine.”

“Why were you worried?”

“Heloise, the accident was really damaging to your body. If you notice, you have several bruises all over your skin, you had a concussion and… And I’m sorry to say this, but… But the baby couldn’t resist the impact.”

My senses went blank as soon as the words escaped his lips. He couldn’t be serious, no, that was impossible. Tears crashed through my eyes and down my face as I tried to settle the idea. My baby… The whole lot of plans I had… It was exciting. And now, over.
