It's kinda hard to find books about normal black people. I find it so hard to find books with black protagonists if I don't click on Urban. PSA: all black people don't live in the hood. We all don't fall in love with thugs. We all weren't raised by a single mother. Our dad's aren't kingpins, deadbeat, drunk, or abusive. Our sisters aren't aren't teen moms/baby mama's, our brothers are thugs/drug addicts.
I'm not saying anythings wrong with writing those stories, because some of them are really really good. Just don't feel like you have to write about hood life. Write about that black family in the suburbs, where the girl lives country music, and the brothers a computer geeks.
I think that sometimes, writers feel like they have to write those kinds of books. But if you branch out, you open the door for other writers to step out of their confines.
I'll read sci-fi, fantasy, and historical fiction with black main characters. I'm pretty sure a lot of other people would. Representation matters.
