I've seen people wonder why nonwhite people prefer to go by "people of color" instead of "colored people". To them it's just flipping the words around and it doesn't make sense. Let me explain.
Colored people brings to mind segregation. It bring to mind a time of oppression. When we were not allowed the same opportunities as white people. When black people were called Negroes or Niggers: when we were lynched and beaten. When the Klan blatantly burned crosses in front churches and homes. When there was nothing a person of color could do about the Klan.
When a 14 year old boy can be lynched and burned for allegedly whistling at a white woman. When a 14 year old boy can be put in the electric chair. When children can be murdered in the name of racism and bigotry.
When to make eye contact with a white person was "uppity and disrespectful". When a man could be killed for not showing the proper respect. When our women were raped and there was nothing we could do about it. When Mexicans and Blacks were considered on the level of a dog.
That's why we don't say colored people.
