Why is blackface becoming a thing again? I actually have no idea if it ever went away. But on Instagram, I've seen two cases of blackface. PSA: painting your face brown is still blackface. I think Instagram has since removed them, but these pictures had thousands (?) of likes.
You can also cosplay without blackface. I think people will know who you are without you making yourself darker.
12-20-17 edit: someone commented and said that sometimes blacking your face is a cultural or religious thing. Blackface is a mockery of black people, so beauty masks or religious/cultural things do not count.
