There is a difference between discrimination/prejudice and oppression. For example, women (as a gender, disregarding race and just using a blanket statement) in the United States are not oppressed.
Yes, women can be discriminated against, but they are not oppressed.Discrimination= the unjust or prejudicial treatment of different categories of people or things, especially on the grounds of race, age, or sex.
Prejudice= preconceived opinion that is not based on reason or actual experience.
Oppression= prolonged cruel or unjust treatment or control.
Even though this defintion say that, I don't think its quite correct. Feminists might argue that women have been subject to unjust treatment. That's not quite oppression though.
Oppression in my mind is the treatment of people of color in history and how it has affected their descendents. It's how in history Romans oppressed Christians, and how the US government put Japanese people into intermentcamps, and the Holocaust. That's oppression to me, but women not being able to walk around outside without shirts on isn't.
That's also one problem I have with feminism, they believe that women are oppressed, and they seem to take pride in saying "I'm more oppressed than you are"...
I was reading some feminism book on here, and they were listing reasons why women are oppressed. I went down the list and commented, that's not oppression to many of them. I'm going to tag her here so you can go to her book and see for yourself. gretschreib 's "My Activist Rants", Chapter- Women in America Aren't Oppressed
(Note: If you read this I'm not trying to attack you or anything and I apologize if it comes off like that)
