POV: Dustin
We sit here awkwardly on my bed before Sam finally asks, "So do ya wanna start studying?"
"Yeah, thats a great idea."
We pull out our text books.
"What subject do you want to do first."
"Probably Science," she says.
I nod my head and arrange my science stuff. I like Sam, she kinda reminds me of Max. I'm still not quite over Max. Seeing her with Lucas is painful but I manage.
We study for a while before it's eventually dinner time. My mum walks up into my room and screams.
"DUSTY!"
"Yes mom?"
"WHO. IS. THIS???"
"This is my friend Sam."
"Your friend?"
"Yes mom. My friend."
"Oh," she laughs nervously, "I'm sorry Dusty I didn't realise that you had a friend over."
"It's okay mom," I say embarrassed over how she's reacting, "I should have let you know."
"That's...that's alright. Would you like to have dinner with us?"
"No mom thats ok," I reply quickly.
"Actually that'd be lovely," she says sweetly, "I'm starting ta get a little hungry anyways."
I sigh.
"Well dinners ready so you can come down and eat," Mom says.
"Okay," Sam says.
Mom walks out and leaves the door wide open behind her.
"Your mum's sweet," Sam says standing up, "are you close?"
"Yeah. Well, since my dad left, I'm all she has so she kinda smothers me," I say sheepishly.
When I mention my dad Sam looks at me sympathetically.
"Well, I think it's sweet, not many boys are close with their mums."
"I guess," I says standing up.
We both head down and have dinner. We has soup for dinner, mom can't really cook so it wasn't great, but Sam continued to be polite and assured her that it was great. After dinner we head back up stairs and sit in my room and talk for a while. She looks really pretty, the dull orange glow from the light suites her. Soon she is sitting right next to me. How did this happen? And before I know it she is leaning into me slowly. I don't know what to do or what is happening so I just sit there. Then I feel her lips on mine and realise what is happening. I kiss her back but I don't pull away. All of a sudden Max's face comes into my mind and I shove Sam off of me. She is lying on the ground looking at me stunned, her face goes red and she looks away. I her a sniffle and when she stands up I see tears welling up I her eyes.
"Oh Sam, I'm sorry. I didn't been t..."
"I should go," she says shoving her books into her bag.
She turns and rushes out the door.
"Sam wait!" I cry.
She turns back, "Tell ya mum I said thank you for dinner," she says and runs down the stairs and out the door.
