Chapter 6 - Nerds

POV: Sam

Me, Dustin, Will, Lucas, Mike and that other girl whose name I think is Max are walking through the hallways when the boys start to get excited.

"He's here!" Will says to us.

Lucas looks at him quizzically, "Who's here?"

"Mr Clarke!"

"Yes!" the boys say together.

"Who's that?" I ask.

Dustin turns to me, "Only the best teacher ever!"

"Wow, must be if you guys are so excited over him," I mumble.

I see a lanky, nerdy looking teacher with a funny moustache walk over to the boys.

"Hey kids," he says.

"Hi Mr Clarke," they all say.

Will looks concerned, "Are you ok? Mr Jefferson said that you were sick."

Mr Clarke laughs, "Me? Sick? Never. Between you and me, I just told the school that so they would let me off easy."

"Then what were you doing?" Asks Mike.

Mr Clarke's eyes brighten.

"I'll show you!"

We follow Mr Clarke through the hallway until we stop in front of a door that says 'AV Club' on the front.

Max looks at me.

"Nerds," she mouths with a smile.

I laugh and shake my head. No wonder they like Mr Clarke. He is the grown up version of them. He may even be nerdier than them (if thats possible).

The boys get excited as his hand lingers on the door handle.

"Are you ready boys," he says.

"Just open it," Lucas says excitedly.

Mr Clarke laughs, "Ok, ok."

He opens the door and the boys race in. Sitting on the table is a bulky, expensive looking machine connected to millions of wires and is covered in dials and flashing lights.

"The HeathKit!" Will exclaims, "I can't believe it! It finally came!"

"Yeah well, since the last one broke and you guys were so disappointed, I figured that I may as well buy this one. Thats what I have been trying to get for the last couple of days," Mr Clarke says.

Will turns around confused, "Last one? We've had one of these before?"

"Uhh, yeah. Only lasted a couple of days so you didn't get to see it."

"Oh." 

"What is it?" I ask.

Dustin turns to me, "It's a new advanced piece of technology that allows us to contact people all over the world!"

"Struth," I say, not understanding a word he said. 

The bell rings and we all head off to class.

(Later during science class.)

"Everyone turn to page 206 and have a quick read over it," says Mr Clarke.

I am in science class sitting next to Dustin. I like him. He seems really nice...and he's kinda cute. Out of the boys, Dustin has been the nicest to me. And he's suuuuper smart, wayyyy smart than me...in fact, everyone here seems to be smarter than me.

I open my book up to the right page and quickly scan over it. Atoms and mitochondria's? What is this? I don't understand anything. We never learnt anything close to this back in Australia. I slouch down in my chair and groan.

"What's wrong?" Dustin asks concerned.

"I's not the same curriculum!" I complain.

"That sucks. Well, with a bit of study I'm sure you'll be fine." 

I slump down further in my chair, "I'm so stupid." 

"If you're really having that much trouble I...I could tutor you?" he says nervously.

"Really?" I ask surprised.

"I mean yeah, why not?" 

"Ok, that'd be great, when 'r you thinking?"

"You could come over after school if you like?"

"Yeah, works with me."

"Well, ok."

"M'kay," I smile.

"Oh and by the way, Steve is taking me back to my house today."

"Steve? Who's Steve?"

(After school.)

"Thats Steve," Dustin says.

He's pointing at a good looking teenage boy with long brown hair, sitting in an expensive looking car.

"Dustin," Steve says waving us over.

We hurry over to the car and jump in.

"Wow! She's a beaut," I say, talking about the car.

"Yeah, she is," Steve says.

He turns around and grins at Dustin.

"Who's this?" he asks.

"Um, this is Sam," he replies.

"Ohh. Sam. I see," he grins turning back, "I told you last year this would happen, did I not?"

Dustin laughs, his face goes red and he puts his head in his hands. I laugh at Dustin's adorable embarrassed face, even though I still don't know what they were just talking about.
