Jaxon POV:
She was peacefully asleep in her bed. Her eyes closed and almost the entirety of her right shoulder covered in bandages. I studied her carefully, my mind racing. She was human, that was undeniable. Yet she could hear my voice. And I could hear hers.
And that should be impossible. But it wasn't. She was real, in front of him.
"Jax?" an old, withering voice calls from behind him. His great-grandfather wheels over, a smile bright on his face. "What are you thinking about son? All I can hear is confusion. It's clouding my happy thoughts." I smile.
"Sorry, grandfather. I just..." I looked back at her. "I don't understand. "
His grandfather laughed a hoarse laugh. His eyes still light. I didn't understand how I could be the great-grandson of someone so careless. "Son, you're too used to understanding things. Your school, and telepathy, even girls."
"Gramps," I exclaimed, rolling my eyes.
"Your right. Just because they throw themselves at you doesn't mean you understand them."
I growled but the smile didn't vanish.
"Did you consider that this girl may have Keeper blood."
"But she's...she's human."
He laughed again, "Son, humans may not have our gifts, but they are just as capable."
"Sure," I whispered. The only thing I didn't like about my grandfather. His interest in humans. I would save and protect them but I didn't interact with them unless it was to stop them. How could things that need protecting be as capable as their protectors? It was impossible.
Cecile POV:
Queasiness and dizziness took over me the minute I opened my leaden eyes. I shut them quickly letting them fade away again. My shoulder throbbed, the agonizing pains gone. Filling my lungs with air I opened my eyes again. The dizziness came again but it was bearable enough.
With little effort, I moved my head to the side trying to make out my surrounding. I looked down at my body, where my shoulder was entirely bandaged and my body felt stiff. I lifted my left hand into the air, my right sending me groaning every time I moved it.
Pushing myself up with my left hand I blinked away the dizziness. The room around me was painfully bright. A white curtain had been pulled around my white bed. The monitor's dark screens stood out against their yellow-white borders. The monotonous beep of the heart monitor echoed around the room.
"Hello," I called out. What happened? "Hey," I shout again, my only answer is my echo. I blow my cheeks out, frustration growing on me. I'm about to yell again when the curtain parts. Jaxon's grinning face meets mine. Him.
"Where the hell am I?"
"You don't like it when people save your ass, do you?"He stood beside me, his arms crossed over his chest. So close I could see the glimmer of green in his eyes. I pushed my stupid thoughts out of my head.
" My ass doesn't need to be saved. I was perfectly fine," I retorted trying to move my right arm again and grimacing.
"If fine means about to be killed, then fine."
"You got me shot!"
"Maybe the first thing we should work on is your manners."
"First thing! I'm not spending another minute with you." I pulled the IV out of my arm quickly and swung my legs over to the other side of the bed. Witha quick shove I was teetering on my feet. I was still wearing my jeans, which were crinkled and uncomfortable. I need to find someone who wasn't as insufferable.
Ignoring the pain in my shoulder I yanked the curtain away and gaped at the sight before me. It was definitely a hospital, but it was most certainly not normal. People were moving around so quick I could barely see them. People hovered over beds, various parts of them wrapped in bandages. I stumbled back right into him.
I whirled quickly, his face inches from mine. My voice caught in my throat. I glared at him instead, my retort useless.
" You done?" he asked, raising an eyebrow. I finally found my voice. Staring back at his beautiful face.
"Where am I?" my voice was softer than I wanted it to be. He smiled and helped me back into my bed. I slid under the covers reluctantly yet slightly grateful. Pulling a chair to the side, he sat carefully as if waiting to be berated again. But I had no energy.
"You're in my home. My real home. The home of the Keepers."
I sighed, "Who are the Keepers?"
"We protect humans. There are seven different bloodlines, all of which obtain different gifts. I'll spare you those details right now. We are all telepathic in a way. If I directed a thought at someone, they'd hear it."
"Why am I here?"
"Because...hold on." Because you can hear me.
"I'm telepathic," I said excitedly.
"We have to research more."
"But my home..."
"We took care of that. For now, you have to rest."
"But..." I retorted but he was gone. I let myself sink deeper into the bed. If I wasn't to get answers I might as well rest. Maybe I'd get answers in my dreams. It what always happened in the stories. And it seemed it was a story I was living in now.
Jaxon POV:
After checking to make sure she had fallen asleep I slipped out of her room and hurried out of the infirmary. I really did dislike that place. It held too many things and thoughts I didn' want to face. The bright sun greeted me cheerily.
The Den was bustling as if always was during this time. Keepers going about their daily activities. From the look, you wouldn't be able to tell the difference between us and the humans. We were intertwined so. Our architecture and languages. But without us, humans would be gone.
I let myself enjoy the chattering of the many Keepers. The ones who didn't have to fight. The ones who had only known the walls of this safe city. I walked past the small restaurants and shops. Looking into windows at people with cheery faces. I could enjoy these things now. Because soon I would be off again. To another part of the human world. To save more humans.
My home was tucked in between a tiny pizza shop and an ice cream shop. I had chosen it specifically because of its location near two of my favorites foods. It was quite large. Four rooms, 3 bathrooms, even a small game room in the basement. But it was all for naught because except for these scarce moments, I was never home.
I let myself fall onto the plush couch. It's cushions enveloping my tired body. I only had a few hours before I had to go train again. With a quick thought, I ordered a large pizza and then pulled my only blanket around me. I stared at my blank walls, waiting.
That girl.
She seemed to invade my thoughts whenever my mind wasn't occupied. I needed a moment to myself, but thoughts of that girl pushed at me. And so many questions. Probably more than she had. Who was she? How could she hear me? She wasn't telepathic, that was certain. She wasn't in my bloodline. Then whose. And a human?
The doorbell rings and I guessed the pizza guy had finally brought my salvation. Without moving, I opened the door and slowly drifted the pizza into my hands. The warmth of the box sent a tingling excitement through my entire body.
Shutting the door I flipped open the box, immediately wolfing down the slices. Maybe this wasn't such a bad life.
Sorry guys, not too long of a chapter. I hope you liked it anyway. What do you think will happen next? I'll explain the whole Keeper thing in the next chapter. What do you think it is? Please comment if you liked it! Love you all.
