Writing in 3rd person:

Writers choose to write in 3rd person to let the readers experience not only the main character's emotions, but the people around her/him.
This leads us to Rule #1.

Rule 1
When writing in 3rd POV, even if the story revolves around one person, show other characters emotions.
'Harry was deeply saddened by what Petra has said.'

RULE 2
When readers read a book in 1st POV, they only know information the main character knows.
When writing in 3rd person, show information that the readers know but the main character doesn't.
'Milly didn't know this, but the moment she opened the door Xander fought the urge to hug her.'

RULE 3:
3rd person is often used for the readers not to only view what other characters think, but understand the protagonist more than we would if its 1st POV.
'Via wont admit it, but she was jealous.'
'She tricked herself to believe coming back to this place is a good thing, but this place is nothing but evil.'

Lorrie Moore puts this into words better than I do: "There are times when the first person is necessary for observing others (not the protagonist) in a voice that simultaneously creates a character (usually the protagonist); then there are times when the third person is necessary for observing the protagonist in a voice that is not the character's but the story's."

Over all, I personally think writing a story in 3rd person makes it more complex and interesting!
