» how to write a villain

1. MOTIVE

Your villain must have a motivation to kill your OC.
The motive must be understandable.
Whether its to fulfil a
prophecy or family legacy, the villain must have a clear motive.

2. SHOW THAT YOUR
VILLAIN WAS NOT ALWAYS A BAD GUY

Try to avoid making your villain
seem like he was born evil.
It is unrealistic.

Show the readers that he wasn't
always evil.
Show the readers the reason he is.

'Because he wants power' isn't enough of a reason!

3. GIVE YOUR CHARACTERS REASON TO HATE THE VILLAIN

As it says, the characters
must each have a specific (and different) reason to hate the villain.

One might hate them because of their determination to kill the OC, or because they want to protect their friends, or to avenge loved ones killed by the villains.

4. MAKE YOUR VILLAIN
DIFFICULT TO DEFEAT

Make your villain strong and smart.
There is no point in writing a villain that could be easily defeated.
Make them manipulative and intelligent.

5. MAKE THE VILLAIN
OBLIVIOUS OF HOW EVIL HE IS

Make the villain convinced he is the good guy, and what
he's doing is the right thing.

6. MAKE THE VILLAIN
SOME WHAT LIKEABLE

Make the readers be entertained and interested when the villain is on screen, or had a scene in your book.
Give your villain likeable qualities, rather than making the readers dread reading the book simply because of the 'annoying' villain.

SHOULD HAVE:

PERSUASIVE
VENGEFUL
PROUD
AMBITIOUS
JEALOUS
(especially of hero)
WILL STOP AT NOTHING TO GET WHAT THEY WANT
