She ran down the hall and I chased after her. Turning sharp corners and running up stairs she made me lose her.
"Dammit."
I realized I was near my locker after turning around and I opened it to grab one of my plaid jackets out of it. I looked to the door of my rusty black locker and found a note sticking out of it. Unfolding the note to have words perform across the page saying.
"Meet me at the South Side Junior High. - J.B. Admirer."
I slammed it shut wrapping my plaid jacket around my waist and heading down the stairs and walking out the front exit. Finding my bike with Betty right by it.
"Betty what are you doing here?"
"Jug I'm not letting you solve this alone. What you got in your hand?"
"A note from someone that knew J.B."
I climbed on my motorcycle handing Betty a helmet and she grabbed it and buckled it onto her head, wrapping her hands around my waist after she sat down behind me. Passing my dad and he had a smile on his face as we drove away.
Not to far away far away from the school lied South Side Junior High. I climbed off my bike and grabbed Betty's hand after she pulled off her helmet. As I walked towards the building I saw kids staring at me dead in the eyes, making everything dead silent. I held Betty's hand tight as cops were in the halls. I looked up to find a young boy being questioned, but he broke apart from the cops and walked into the guys bathroom. He grabbed my arm as I walked by, pulling Betty with me.
"What the hell? Who are you?"
"I'm J.B.'s boyfriend, well I was."
"What?!"
"She didn't tell anyone very much. Guess I'm one of the things. Anyways there was a huge reason Jellybean made a deal. It all started off with her not being a okay."
Now I'm going write his side of the story.
She walked into a bar late at night to find our mother doing shots and smoking a cigarette. She grabbed my moms arm and looked her dead in the eyes.
"I'm not going to bail you out of jail again. I used all my college money to save you last time, now come on."
Starting to pull her arms out of my sisters grasp, clumsily looking at her.
"No!"
"Yes." She grabbed her arm and pulled her in. My mom raised her arm and with all of her strength smacked her across the face. Making her fall to the ground and she started to choke up blood.
"Jellybean what the hell is going on?"
"I've been coughing up blood all week but you weren't there to care."
She said looking at our mom. But standing up weakly and walking out of the bar, but not before she saw another beer being laid down on the counter. She turned away from disgust and walked out. He ran up, his name is Chev. Locking eyes with her as she wiped the blood off of her face.
"Jellybean what happened?"
"Nothing Chev I'm Fine."
"You're coughing up blood again aren't you?"
"Why do you know me so well?"
"Because your my best friend."
She nudged him in the arm, he looked up making her turn around.
"Jellybean I'm sorry. So sorry."
My mother proclaimed.
"It's fine."
"I'm giving up drinking."
"Okay." She turned away with tears in her eyes.
"Jellybean talk to her."
Shoving him to the side.
"Jellybean!"
My mother screeched.
"What! What! You expect me to believe you when you stole my college fund that I may need now for a doctors appointment to find out why I'm coughing up blood! What if I have cancer huh? Huh? For alcohol, have fun knowing that."
She started to walk home, leaving them in fear.
"I'll make it up to you Jellybean! I'll make it up to you dammit!"
Leaving our mother to Chev but he decided to start following her back to the house.
"Chev why were you at the bar?"
"Because I saw you and I knew you were going here and I couldn't let you do it by yourself."
"Why?"
"Because I know You have cancer. You may have not told me or have a diagnosis but I know you do. Plus why would I let you walk in there fragile and in pain and take on a battle. That's not a best friend."
"Thank you. But how can I find out. I had enough money in that fund to get a diagnosis. Harvard, Harvard is my dream college and it's gone. All gone."
She faced away from him. With tears running down her face. He grabbed her by the arm looking her in the eyes as he swung her around gently.
"We'll figure this out trust me."
"I'm not going to put this on your shoulders too."
"I'm putting it on my shoulders."
"Why?"
He leaned in grabbing her face meeting his lips with hers. Not caring about what just happened, making her forget it all. He looked her dead in the eyes.
"That's why."
She grabbed his face and met his lips once more.
"I - I don't know. You shouldn't be part of this horror."
"It's not horror unless you make it out to be."
He walked her home holding her side firmly. Hoping she would be okay with everything. Walking up to the old brick house. He opened the door with her key.
"I could've done that you know that right?"
"Nah it's more fun this way."
They walked into the house that had old photos of the whole family.
"Want to watch a movie to get this night off our minds?"
"What movie?"
"Friday the 13th?"
"Okay."
Jellybean walked to her room that had plain walls that were part brick and grabbed a blanket and pillow. Walking down the hall and found Chev looking her in the eyes with confusion.
"What? You really thought I was going to let you walk home this late?"
"No."
He gazed at the clock to find it was one in the morning, his foster parents didn't give him a curfew because they didn't care. She laid the pillow down and he laid on it and looked at Jellybean and saw her sitting by his feet.
"What are you doing?"
"My ass cheeks are on the couch."
He laughed with a big smile and she laughed as well. He sat up and grabbed her hand pulling her close. Wrapping his hand around her waist and having her lay down next to him.
"Your skin is like -10 degrees no way I'm letting you go."
"Okay."
