Chapter 18

You're the dream I go to  every time I close my eyes - Unknown

" I don't want to hear it, Avis." Aspen said trying to walk away from the young messenger, but she only continued to follow. Avis was the messenger of the counsel, and had been appropriately named, in the ancient immortalem Avis meaning 'bird'; even in her natural form, she was quite small.

" The counsel has agreed upon it, you need to return home."

" Home to what?" Aspen said turning on her. " Home to a place where I will be constantly reminded of my mistakes; to a place where I will never be happy?" She questioned and Avis looked away in response before they both turned to find Ben approaching them. " We will continue this discussion later, for now you can tell the counsel that I'm staying here."

" But- Alright." Avis said when Aspen gave her a look before disappearing.

" Is something wrong?" Ben asked and Aspen crossed her arms in annoyance before turning to look at him. " Just stupid counsel stuff. Did you need something?"

" You looked like you were about to punch something, so I decided to come to the poor girl's rescue."

" What a hero." Aspen muttered sarcastically, before she turned to walk away, only to spin around with her lightsaber drawn as Ben suddenly swung his; the blue and white blades connected in a flash of light, and a smirk appeared on both their faces, before they began to spar back and forth, neither giving in but both evenly matched in skill. That was until, Ben made a mistake and found himself pinned to the ground with both his and her lightsaber at his throat, but somehow he had managed to get ahold of Aspen's second saber, which he held to her throat. They both stared at each other as they breathed deeply in exhaustion, before a clap sounded from above and Aspen stepped away from Ben, deactivated the lightsabers, and tossed Ben's to the ground beside him.

Ben watched her walk away in amazement, before he turned to look toward the source of the clap to find his Uncle standing on the balcony, his eyes narrowed as he stared at Ben. Luke walked away after a few minutes, and Ben glanced back toward where Aspen had once stood, then at the saber he still held in his hand.

*********

Later that day, Aspen sat with her knees pulled up to her chest watching as the sun set in the distance, but her mind was obviously somewhere else. Something was set next to her, her lightsaber, and she glanced over as Ben climbed up next to her, neither said anything but Aspen found herself leaning her head against his shoulder as the silence went on. " If only the world freeze like this?" He muttered, and she smiled, closing her eyes.

" Trust me, to be frozen in time is no gift."

" It is when I'm with you." He responded, and she opened her eyes before turning to look at him, her expression serious. " Please, rid yourself of those thought. You shouldn't speak of things like that, especially not about someone like me."

" Why not?" He questioned, and she turned away, only for him to turn her back toward him. " Why? What is so wrong about how I feel for you?" Ben demanded when he noticed the tears streaming down her face. " Mu uncle, did he say something?"

" No. No." She said shaking her head, and pulling away to wipe her tears away. " It's not your Uncle, Ben."

" Then what is it? Did I do something wrong?"

" No." She replied." It's just that, your to be a Jedi, and your my charge now, we can never be, Ben." She turned to look at him, and he seemed to make a decision. " Then, I won't be a Jedi. I'll tell my Uncle that this isn't for me, and-"

" I don't love you." She said cutting him off, and shock filled his face. " Aspen, you-"

She slipped off the wall, leaving Ben to stare after her.

For Aspen the heartbreak was new, but all to familiar; this time though, it was self inflicted. She did this for him, that was what she told herself.

For Ben, it was life altering; the memory of the girl he loved running away would be burned into not only his memory, but heart and soul.

Pain feeds the darkness, and in broken hearts it finds a home.

With the series coming to an end I can finally start updating again. I have yet to watch the Rise of Skywalker, so please no spoilers. Sorry for the wait, but I wanted to make sure I got the timeline right before I started typing again, I try very hard to keep to the actual story while also making changes here and there.

Don't forget to comment below, and I'll try to get another update out soon.
