(Harrington! Reader x Dustin)
(This is going to be a long one)"Hey mom, I'm going out!" I shouted to my mother up the grand stairs. As I waited for an answer I see her coming down the stairs with an expecting look upon her face.
"And just where do you think you are going?" She crossed her arms. Truth is, that Lucas and Dustin had called you up on your Walkie talkie to the the junkyard, some business matter.
"Uhh... To..the library, I'm going to the library." I lied out my teeth. Although I hesitated, lying was in my blood I was a Harrington for gods sake. Probably learned behavior from Steve.
"At this time of day? It'll be dark soon!"
She exclaimed. Actually it was 4:30 pm but around this time of year sunset would be soon, she was right. You were caught. You needed to get there somehow, and fast. Just your luck Steve, your brother walked by.
"I'll take her mom, I'll make sure that we come home before dinner." Steve lied, you could tell. What can you say?
It takes a liar to know a liar. Both of you headed out the house and into Steve's car. You sat in the front passenger seat. "So where are you going really?" He stepped in himself.
"Huh?" You questioned. You thought the easiest way out of this was to ditch Steve at the library and go to the junkyard yourself, even on feet if you had to.
"C'mon, I know you were lying, so where are you planning on going?" He pushed your shoulder a bit, egging you on. "The junkyard, The boys need me there."
You looked at Steve expecting to see some kind of disapproving look. Instead his face was neutral, "Alright, let's go." He latched the key in the ignition and pulled the gear shift into drive.
The car ride was silent for the most part but you couldn't help but ask once you were near the end of the road.
"Aren't you going to take me home?"
He turned to his side to look at you.His face is quizzical, "We just got here, wh-" "No! I mean, why didn't you take me back? Why did you take me here although I lied?"
Steve's face furrowed, as he took a deep breath through his nose, sitting back in the leather seats. He thought about his next words carefully, thinking that now would be a time where a father like figure would step in.
But both of you knew that a father figure was not expected in your family, so Steve himself would have to step in.
"Look, I know you don't have many friends..." He paused once again thinking about his words."and I know that it's partially my fault,"
Steve was right, because of his grade A asshole attitude including his reputation as Hawkins High School King, expectations were too high for you."So if lying to mom means having friends, then so be it." He looked at you, one of his precious locks flinging loose in the process. You still looked at the empty road, taking in his words of wisdom.
"Thank you." Was all you said. "What?"
"I said Thank you." You repeated. Thank yous were a rarity in the Harrington household, having parents not really being there to say it.Steve, still focused on the road, showed no emotion, and although you saw none he smiled on the inside patting himself on the back.
You of all people would see Steve's new side. Last year he was nothing but a douche, but even if he had a hard shell showing, you saw that it had softened.
The car came to a stop, at the dead end and where the rail road tracks begun.
You both opened and closed your car doors each stepping out. Steve opens his trunk seeing all his weapons from last year.He carried the box of things that consisted of lighters and fluid, and some kind of meat like beef or whatever. You took the nail bat, much to Steve's disliking, his hands were already full.
You walked, down the endless rail road of wood and metal. Again, you and Steve didn't talk much, but when you got there you were greeted by Dustin, Lucas, and much to your dislike, Max.
"Hi y/n!" Dustin happily greeted you, as Lucas gave a low, "get to work."
So you did, you worked on making a barrier around the old bus.On the other hand, Steve was watching with much attention. Dustin stood far too close, and smiled a smile far too big. He blushed, it was only a matter of time before Steve connected the dots.
Steve saw no harm at first, having a little crush on his little sister didn't seem so bad until he realized the kind of world we lived in.
He saw the way Dustin said some sort of joke that made you laugh, he seemed so proud of himself...
Until He called him over to where he was standing, just out of your hearing range. "Yeah?" He looked up to Steve, squinting a bit from the light angle.
"What in the hell do you think your doing?" He placed his hands on his hips, his signature sassy pose you knew well. You saw him do this in a distance and knew that it'd be up to no good.
"What do you mean?" His voice cracking under social pressure. "I mean, what do you think your doing to my sister!?" He gestured to you, across the yard, still working.
Dustin looking in your direction, "Y/n? What about her?" He looked back at Steve. "I know you like her, it's obvious!"
"Shit! Really? You think she noticed?"
"No."
"Oh, okay."
"No! Not okay! Until I know your good for her, step off!" He pushed him slightly. Dustin wasn't hurt by Steve's actions, but the fact that he didn't like the image of you and Dustin together as much as he did.
Steve once again took a moment to take a deep breath through his nose, and chose his next words carefully. Dustin didn't have much of a role model, so Steve filled in the slot.
"You treat her nice, and if you hurt her," Steve didn't exactly like the idea of you and boys, but like before, it's somewhat his fault. "I keep that bat for a reason." He pointed to the one resting on its side by the entrance of the bus.
Dustin seemed to lighten up as he walked from the conversation/threat with Steve.
As Steve watched Dustin return to your side, and see that you looked much happier with him then himself, Steve realized that the desperate boy maybe wasn't so bad in a family photo with you.
