Vernon walked into school in a large green hoodie, another letter in hand. The school was unusually packed that morning, Vernon having to force himself down the hallway to Seungkwan's locker.
A fire was burning within him, thinking about how Mingyu might win over Seungkwan. His party was the next night, and he could serenade and kiss Seungkwan as much as he pleased, just like he did with everyone else he ever dated. Vernon refused to let Seungkwan date such a terrible man.
Vernon turned onto the hallway on his right, where he knew Seungkwan's locker. His breathing hitched in his throat as he walked towards it, his mind wandering to all the terrible possibilities that could occur if Seungkwan really did fall for Mingyu. Vernon could see Seungkwan's genuine smiles at Mingyu as they had fun together, knowing that Mingyu's were not as real and loving. Seungkwan should only be looking at Vernon like that, no one else.
Vernon turned sighed, looking at the letter in his trembling hands before lifting it up to the top opening of the locker, hoping to slide it into the compartment.
"I thought I told you to stop with this nonsense."
Vernon's head turned, finding Mingyu leaning on the locker beside him. Mingyu's strong arms were crossed over one another as he gave Vernon a very cross look. His eyes were a menacing shade of black as he peered into Vernon's dull brown eyes.
Vernon simply slipped the note into the locker, giving Mingyu a small smile. No matter how badly Mingyu scowled at him, Mingyu could not hurt him in the school hallway. He had a reputation to uphold as the school's valedictorian and basketball captain.
"You just don't listen, do you?" Mingyu mumbled, as a boy walked past him.
"I'm not doing anything wrong," Vernon countered, "I haven't really gotten in the way of you making moves on Seungkwan. He just wants me to continue giving him letters."
"And why is that?" Mingyu stood straight, taking a step closer to Vernon. Vernon did not even move.
"Because he said, and I quote, 'I wasn't dating Mingyu before that fucking car hit me,'" Vernon spoke.
Mingyu gripped onto the collar of Vernon's sweater, pulling Vernon close to him. "Don't you dare play games, Vernon."
"Mingyu!"
Mingyu looked at his potential lover Seungkwan, who held countless books in his hands. Mingyu switched roles immediately, grabbing the stack of books from Seungkwan's arms while flashing a dazzling smile.
"Morning, Seungkwan," Mingyu greeted him, "how have you been? Are you ready for the party tomorrow?"
"Don't act like I didn't see what happened," Seungkwan rolled his eyes, looking into Mingyu's suddenly loving eyes. "What the hell is happening here?"
Mingyu sighed, pinching the bridge of his nose. "Vernon has been trying to make you hate me, Seungkwan, since we started talking to one another. Everyday, he threatens me, tells me that you will one day remember everything you and him shared and that I am nothing to him. I'm tired of it! I'm tired of constantly being put down and shoved onto the side, Seungkwan, because he wants to make sure I'm never happy."
Vernon scowled as Mingyu managed to build fake tears, capturing the attention of other students around them. He was always a good actor.
"Vernon," Seungkwan looked at his past lover with confusion. Things weren't adding up, he couldn't seem to process the truth.
"Bullshit," Vernon mumbled, scoffing and pushing his hair out of his face. "You know Mingyu is manipulative and will fight for whatever he wants. He was so willing to get rid of me at one point that he shoved me while on a moving escalator, removing my entire hand."
Murmurs began to spread across the students surrounding the talking trio. Seungkwan's eyes widened as he felt his stomach churn inside him.
"You know that's not true, Seungkwan," Mingyu countered, "I told you how I traveled around as a child with my mother, how could I have the time to do such a thing to him?"
"Why would I lie about how I lost my fucking limb, Mingyu?" Vernon's voice began to rise. "This is the one thing that has caused me so much pain and anger and you are here willing to deny having any responsibility? Why the hell would I lie?"
"Because you are willing to do anything to have Seungkwan," Mingyu answered, "even if that means lying to his own face about what happened in your past. You are willing to mess up anything that involves him, which includes his own happiness, if it means he'll fall for you again."
Vernon ran his fingers through his hair angrily, listening to Mingyu smooth talk his way into Seungkwan's heart yet again.
Seungkwan's eyes began to water as he looked at Vernon, whose own eyes were threatening to spill tears out of the mere frustration.
"I thought we agreed you'd move on," Seungkwan spoke.
Vernon pinched the bridge of his nose. He could not believe the words that were spilling from Seungkwan's mouth. "Seungkwan, how can you not believe me?"
"You promised me that you would attempt to move on and be happy. Why do you do this to yourself? Why hold onto me? Why can't you jus-"
"I won't ever be happy if I know that the love of my life is in love with someone who at one point wanted me dead, Seungkwan! That's why! That's why I keep fighting, that's why I keep going on and on with all the letters and hanging out with you! He doesn't deserve your happiness and to see your smiles and hear your laughter. I do!" Vernon yelled, punching the door of Seungkwan's locker.
Seungkwan took a step back, Mingyu wrapping his arm around him to comfort him. Vernon watched in horror as Seungkwan wrapped his arms around Mingyu's tall body, tears falling down his face. Vernon knew from watching the scene play out that Seungkwan no longer liked him.
Seungkwan thought he was a monster.
Vernon turned away, rushing down the hallway towards the exit, his heart filled with nothing more but the desire to die. He ran past Rose, who called his name over and over, trying to get him to come back and talk to her. Vernon, however, was too far gone.
Seungkwan would never love him again.
