I remember when Sam told me that story. I remember seeing the pain in her eyes when recalling the whole event. I also remembered how I cried with her. Two strong people crying isn't a pretty sight, our faces looked like a forced sadness.
I was 17 when she told me. We were both still in highschool trying to survive the rough schedules and unintelligent teachers. We weren't alone in those devestating four years, we had our group. There was me, Lenice: the crazy weird one whom some of us tolerated and the defender of my friends, fighting if necessary, Hannah: attempts to play the dumb blonde roll but is actually quite smart and very strong for a tiny body, Eliza: (whom I personally despise) she's what I call the demon behind angelic eyes, Mike: my old friend before we fell apart, Eliza's boyfriend, and he was the insane one - you do not want to see this guy on a sugar high, Hannah D: to make this simple we will call her DeFrain, it's her last name, she's the relatable one of the group, Brock: he's the tall and insanely skinny one of the group, he's also the entertainer, Alaina: she's the sweetheart of the group, I call her my wife, Sam: she's the tough secret sweetheart of the group, Nathan: the chick magnet even if he acts like no one notices, he's also the overprotective brother of the group, David: Nathan's best friend and the fighter, and finally Harry, or Harrison: he's the pun master.
Our group was fairly large and filled with many unique people. How we all stayed together during parts of our highschool year, I will never quite understand. Don't get me wrong, there were feuds among us. As time went on, a few of us grew apart. I lost my best friend, went off on Eliza, Hannah and David weren't always a happy couple, Mike and Eliza have their issues, and many other petty things that turned our group inside out.
When I think back to those times that we were together, I would smile. Those were some of the happiest moments of my life, but all good things soon come to an end.
By our senior year, we grew too far apart. The bond we had broke and only a few of us kept in contact with one another. Unfortunately as I've been told many times before, friends come, but eventually, they go.* * * * * * *
Let's fast forward a few years. College is behind us and we all have jobs, some of us prospering more than others. I remember that day that started all of this mayhem, it began with a call from Sam. We've grown apart over the years. Once college hit, we said our goodbyes and went our separate ways, so you can understand why it would be a bit surprising that she's calling me now. I was at work when she called, I picked up the phone and hit the answer button.
"Hi, is this Lenice Bailey?" She asked.
"Um yes this is. Whom may I ask is calling?"
"This is Sam Hegerfield. I don't know if you remember me, but we went to school together a few years back."
"Sam? Wow, it's been years since we've last talked. How are you?"
"I'm doing great. I know we haven't talked for years, but are you doing anything next week?"
"I don't believe so, no. Why do you ask?"
"Remember our old group from highschool? Well I called them as well and I was thinking of coming together and go to this cabin in the mountains my dad owns. The view is beautiful, the cabin is exquisite, and I promise it'll be worth your while. The rest of the group will be there!"
"Sam, if you remember, how the group fell apart wasn't good."
"Yes, yes I know, but let's fix this! Please," she begged.
"Fine, but if things go wrong, I'm leaving."
"Excellent! I'll send you the address. See you Monday!" She then hung up the phone.
I remember sitting in my office with the phone still to my ear, I wasn't ready to face the group yet. My heart was pounding in my chest. Memories of all that occurred back then filled my mind and I began to cry. Never have I been so happy to have my own office.
The rest of the workday went by in a blur, and I honestly don't remember most of it. It was Friday, three days until the get together. Three days to back out and forget she ever called, but I didn't, I went and boy do I regret it.
* * * * * * *
The three days I had went by too fast. Once Monday hit, I still didn't know why I didn't change my mind. I packed some warm clothes and tossed my suitcase into my car. Using my GPS, I entered in the address Sam gave me and worked my way up the mountain. It was about an hour drive; not enough time for me to get my thoughts together. I pulled up into the large wooden cabin's driveway. Six other cars were already parked. Snow covered the ground and crunched underneath my feet. I took my suitcase out of the car and walked up to the door.
Two knocks was all it took for Sam to hear me and open the door.
"Lenice! You're here! Welcome!" She said cheerfully.
Stomping my shoes to rid them of snow, I looked up at all the faces I used to know. They stared back at me in response. Hannah gets up from her chair by the fireplace and walks up to me. She then smiles and pulls me into a bear hug.
"Welcome back old friend."
