Hannah slowly opens her eyes as I shake her awake. Tears pour down my eyes. Nathan and David walk into the room and see Mike looking lighter than his usual dark tone. From the looks on their faces, I didn't have to say anything for them to know that Mike is dead.
Sam enters the room and walks over to Mike. She checks his pulse by putting two fingers on his wrist. She removes her hand and her head falls down. Hannah looks at Mike's face, too shocked to move.
"I'll tell Eliza." Sam says as she walks out the room.
"I just get my friend back and now he's dead." I say with tears racing down my eyes.
Eliza rushes into the room with sadness on her face. She covers her mouth with her hands and falls onto her knees. She sobs heavily into her hands. David walks over to her and wraps his arms around her shoulders. Sam walks back into the room and covers his face with the blanket.
"I'll take care of this. We won't be having any activities today. This is now a day of mourning." Sam says calmly.
Hannah looks over at me and wraps her arm around my shoulders, helping me out of the chair. I continue to cry as she guides me back to our room. Once we make it, she sets me down on the bed before closing the bedroom door. I curl onto my side and cry until no tears were left. I began to think about all that has happened today. I also thought about how close Mike and I were before some petty thing drove us apart. I thought about all the good things that he was a part of. I just got my friend back, and now he's gone. That thought drove me into a huge sobbing fit.
Hannah walks over to me and rubs my back. Once I gather myself together, I sit up and walk to the bathroom. After closing and locking the door, I turn around and slide down it. Nothing makes sense. He was alive and breathing just a few hours ago, but then there was that dream. Or at least, I think it was a dream. A figure with a syringe, that's all I could think about. It doesn't make sense, who would want to kill Mike?
It couldn't have been the race, he was perfectly healthy. I kept thinking of explanations as to what could've happened, but came up with nothing. Realizing sitting here wasn't going to accomplish anything, I exit the bathroom. Hannah still sits on the bed. I walk over to her and pull her into a hug. A few tears fall down her eyes and I try my best to comfort her. A knock at the door breaks us apart.
Nathan opens the door a crack and pokes his head into the room. Seeing we were decent, he fully enters.
"Hey, I just came in to check up on how you guys were doing." He says warmly.
"Yeah, were doing okay." I lied.
Nathan walks over to us and pulls us into a hug. He gently rubs our backs and we hold him tight as if he was our life boat, keeping us afloat. He releases us from his hug and we sit down on the bed.
"How did this happen?" Nathan asks us.
"I don't know," Hannah begins, "one minute he's barely alive, but alive all the same, the next, he's gone."
"I don't know if this is important, but last night, a figure entered our room. I was half asleep so everything was blurry, but I could've sworn the figure was female." I state.
"Female?" Nathan says curiously.
"Yeah. The figured touched his face before inserting something into the side of his neck. The figure then left the room and I went back to sleep."
"What? A scary figure enters the room and you don't wake me up? You don't do anything!?" Hannah screams at me.
"I thought it was a dream! Besides, everything was blurry and I could've been wrong!" I retaliate.
"Why did you fall asleep anyways?! You were supposed to keep watch, but no, you weren't capable of the most simplest thing. Now, because of you, Mike is dead!" Hannah storms out the room and slams the door.
I let her words sink in. She's right, I shouldn't have fallen asleep, but I didn't want to wake her up. Nathan looks over at me, concern evident on his face.
"Are you okay?" He asks softly before staring at the door.
"No, but Hannah is feeling worse but is too proud to show it. Go to her." He gives me one last hug before leaving in search of Hannah.
I couldn't shake the feeling that someone wanted Mike dead, but I couldn't think of a reason why. I leave the bedroom and went to the only room that may have the answer, Sam's. I put my ear against the door in search of any sound. Receiving none, I enter the bedroom and pull out Sam's journal from it's hiding spot in the bedsheets.
I open the journal and go through the pages in search of anything that could involve Mike. On page four is a whole page about him. To sum it up, it talked about his strengths and weaknesses, a few events from his past, and what a few types of deadly concoctions. The one she chose is called arsenic: an element that can be formed into a liquid. If injected into a human, it can cause vomiting, heart disease, fainting goats(😂y'all don't want to know), cancer, and even death.
I think back to how Mike was acting when all this occurred. He had a few of the symptoms. Before I could dig too much into it, the door to the bedroom jiggles and I run to the bathroom.
