Cutting up vegetables in a Diner on a Saturday was not how I envisioned my weekend going; but then again being born in a vault isn't how I thought I would live my life. But then again, I don't know life any other way; I just have to soldier through this and deal with it, as my mother used to say. People have it worse, don't take what you have for granted.
Nowadays, I really don't take what I have for granted, I used to have it good and I still do for being blessed with this vault our people have taken care of for nearly two centuries. Not to mention the fact I'm the son of the Overseer, meaning I used to have great living quarters, the best doctors and a full plate of food at the end of each day; along with the other meals of course. But now... that's all gone.
It's still hard to be thankful and appreciative when I don't even know what's on the other side of these fifty ton cement walls.
Stories are passed around but when they get past around some people tend to change them on accident and then the next person changes it along with the next. It's hard to believe any stories nowadays...
The only people who know what's out there are the specific people who explore the wasteland on rare occasions; only once every month though.
They've seen what was out there for long periods of time before returning with lots of things or very little.
Only one man was lost out there in our generation, no one knows what happened to him except for Toby; the man who's been doing runs the most over the years.
Other than Toby and another man who I have yet to meet; no one is allowed outside without authorization for safety reasons, Vault rules.
I'm not saying I want to be an explorer; but that's exactly what I'm saying. I don't hate it here, but I don't like it either.
I've grown for twenty years in this gigantic house of cement and metal filled with four hundred and ninety-nine other people and I'm quite sick of seeing and listening to the same things every day.
I see people working non-stop for five days before they have a break for two. They work in the Diners, cafeteria's, power generators, water production, water purification, Clinics, Med bays, and so on. Then there's the classrooms, gym, fitness studios, athletic studios-
"Vienna!"
I jumped harshly causing the clever that was once cutting vegetables, to dig deep into the counter top.
"Melbourne!" I looked to my right where my one of best friends, Hoseok, was situated cutting meats.
"What? I thought we were shouting capitols." He shrugged earning an eye roll from me and others in return. The dwellers continuing with their conversation.
"Yeah, Luke?"
Luke. My brother; Same raven hair and same brown eyes who is supposedly in line for the next Overseer when Dad retires. He was born seven years before me, so he automatically thinks he's higher authority even though he isn't the Overseer yet and won't be for years to come. Although now; he is on a literal higher level...
Luke continued his conversation with his friend; as I continued mincing garlic...
"I need your help with something."
"But I'm wo-"
"Your shifts over."
I averted my eyes to the silver and black clock, four o'clock on the dot; my shifts over as well...
