Chapter 34
He’s back. Ash halted on his tracks and looked at the Hispanic to his left. This time he was dressed in a formal shirt and slacks, looking rather professional. The guy was leaning against the wall in front of Mrs. Goodwill’s office, a stare leveled at something in the office. A lustful stare, he realized, from the look of his heavy-lidded eyes. Then he heard Grace’s clear voice saying, “Mr. Perez, if you will follow me?”
Ash froze. No fucking way.
Grace came out of the office, a file in her hands, and this guy followed her with his eyes before straightening and walking behind her. Ash clenched his fists. As he strode forward to meet them, Grace looked up.
“Oh hi Ash—I mean, Mr. Asher,” she said with a quick glance at her client. The Hispanic was seizing him up and he was sure that he recognized him from that earlier visit. They stood in front of each other, their eyes meeting and held. Ash wanted to hit something, preferably the man’s freaking straight nose. Except that he had no right to. He shifted towards Grace, wanting to show the guy that she was off-limits.
He nodded to the guy. “Still looking around?” asked Ash, taking his place next to Grace.
“Yeah.” He looked at Grace. “So shall we get moving?”
“Ah yes.” She glanced at Ash with a smile and started down the corridor. They were almost around the corner when Ash decided to just put everything aside and—
“Hey, can I join you?” he asked, jogging to them. They turned around and Grace inclined her head. “If you want to.” She looked at Mr. Perez and asked, “If you don't mind?”
“No I don't mind.”
“Excellent.” Ash resumed position beside Grace and they walked down the corridors while Grace talked about the children. And he observed Mr. Perez.
The man was nervous. His left eyelid was twitching as he looked around, merely a glance, but Ash knew that they took in everything. They wandered around, and Ash took the chance to observe the man. He didn't ask a lot of questions, just moved around, eyes examining each child’s face through the classroom doors. When he was asked about what type of a child he was looking for, he wanted for a set of records of Caucasian kids. Which Ash thought was a strange request.
When they went back to the office, Grace gave him the records and he scanned down the columns. Ash observed his eyes flicking to…the blood group.
Aha.
Ash stood next to him, staring at the records and wondered what group he needed. After a few minutes the man asked for a piece of paper. Grace handed him an A4 sheet and he scribbled a list of names.
“I would like to meet them all please,” he said, handing the list to Grace. Her eyes widened as she took the paper. Ash quickly checked the names with the records and realized that all kids were of blood type AB positive. He wished that he had enough evidence to arrest this guy right now.
Soon, he promised himself.
“What’s the ideal personality of the child you are looking for?” inquired Grace again. "A quiet one or an artistic child? All these children are different from each other and we have to make sure that they go into the right hands.”
“Of course,” said Mr. Perez. Ash gritted his teeth. Bastard.
The guy left after that, agreeing to a date to meet all the five children in his list. When Grace told him that the adopting parents were supposed to meet them, he had simply given an envelope. And he left, all smiles.
