Chapter 38
They were going on a mission. She knew it. She watched them flit around from her position on the couch, dressed in black leather, as a tense silence fell over the house.
Pretending to read a book, she eyed the doorway as once again Nate passed by; a bulky parcel tucked under his arm. She wondered what it contained. Maybe it was for their mission.
A shrill ringing made her start and she saw Nate put his parcel on the floor before pulling out his phone out of his rather tight pants. Alexis just stared, appreciating the view of the leather snugly fitting his long legs.
“Hello?”
A pause. She saw a frown mar his face and he stared ahead fixatedly.
“Yes. But I’m sorry-this is not the right time—” His lips twisted as he was interrupted.
“But I can’t afford to waste time translating to some oblivious Chinese guy—”
“No—”
He snarled as he was interrupted again.
“Ni hao,” he said with a sigh. And then he proceeded to jabber away in the ching-chong language while Alex stared, fascinated. This guy knew Chinese? It was rather surprising yes.
He chattered some more then switched to English and said ‘good bye’ irritably, warning the caller not to disturb him again. Then he turned to face her.
“Enjoyed eavesdropping?” he asked. She recoiled.
“I wasn’t!” she cried completely missing the teasing glint in his eyes. “And it’s not like I would understand anyway.”
He nodded, as he came forward and leant against the doorway. “True. So do you know any foreign languages?” he asked.
She shook her head, pulling her knees closer to her chest. “Just a little Spanish and French. That’s it.” She rested her cheek on her knees and asked, “How many do you know?”
He smirked. “Five. Excluding English.”
“Wow.”
He must have caught her wistful look because he said, “I could teach you some phrases if you want.”
“That would be nice,” she smiled. “Maybe Chinese? I like the sound of it. Its…melodic.”
He gave a nod, then backed away from the door.
“When will you be back?” she blurted out.
He looked at her then nodded. “By tomorrow.”
“Oh…” She smiled. “Good luck then, for whatever you are going to do.”
He grinned. “Yeah. Thanks.”
She turned back to her book, starting to feel bored. Cole was not here to entertain her as he left early today, saying that he couldn’t trust his subordinates to keep order in his design store any longer. She was already missing that unique crazy guy.
The next time she raised her head from her book, all three men were at the front door, talking in soft voices. She slipped down and walked towards them, announcing her presence with a cough. They paused as she came. Kyle gave her a smile which she returned and Adam just looked with his usual blank stare.
She noted that all of them looked delicious in black leather. Leather was definitely going up in her list of favorites. As usual Nate was the best for her, with his hair loose across his neck, a jacket over his black t-shirt with motorbike gloves over his hands.
