Chapter 39

The moon was out and bright, as a cold breeze swept by. It ruffled the leaves of the trees around them but other than that, there was no sound. They were in front of the orphanage now. Nate silently motioned his two men to come forward from the bushes. They had parked their car a few meters away, far enough not to be detected and close enough for a quick escape.

They were currently away from the gates, safe from the security cameras because Adam had tampered with them already. The orphanage had a huge wall around it and their plan was to scale this wall. Since there were only two security guards and both were at the gate, no one would be here to see them.

Nate swept his torch up the wall, noting the possible footholds and dents. The top was smooth and he thanked god that they didn't have to jump of pieces of glass or spikes of metal.

"I'm going first," he murmured and pulled his ski mask on.  It would get bloody hot inside in a few minutes but it served its purpose. To prevent identification. He turned to a helpful tree nearby and tugged on the closest branch to see whether it would support his weight. Satisfied, he scaled up the tree, crawled across a sturdy branch, feeling his way through the dark, and reached across, jumping onto the wall. His fingers immediately clutched the dents on the wall. He hoisted himself up and onto the wall. Then he peered down. Carefully looking for any moving lights ahead, he took out his pen torch and checked the area below.

It was a nice covering of grass and gravel. Nate bit his lip and debated. If he jumped, the landing would be a little rough but safe. Or he could balance on the wall and crawl forward to find a more suitable place, which would waste time. So he jumped. As he fell through the air, he stiffened his legs for the impact. And when it did, pain shot up his body and he gritted his teeth.

Ignore it. Ignore it. You can't feel the pain. You won't. Nate repeated it in his head, something they were thought when they were trained.

He straightened and stepped aside to wait for the others. His eyes went to the orphanage building. They were at the south of the buildings, where the dorms for boys were. The windows didn't show anything as it was dark inside. There was a muffled 'oof' and Kyle dropped down from the wall. Kyle stood up and they both waited for Adam. He saw Adam's figure ready to jump against the moonlight but then, the noise of an engine cut through the air. Adam froze. The next second he had jumped down back to the other side.

"Adam," he hissed , voice muffled under the mask. He strained his ears but all he heard was a rustling of a few bushes. Where did that idiot go?

He almost decided to climb the wall to see where he had gone to but then there was a slam as if a car door was closed. A pair of voices drifted towards them.

"Where is Claire?" asked a female voice with an accent.

"She'll be here," answered a deeper voice.

From their position, they could see the security guard hut. Nate watched a person come out of it and walk towards the gate. He opened it and ushered two people in. The glare of the tube light in front of the security guard hut lit the faces and Nate stared.

A tall woman and a man made their way into the orphanage, their walk confident, reassured. He crept along the wall, keeping to the shadows to see where they were going. Another woman met them in the middle and they turned to the right, towards the girls' dorm.

He frowned. Looking back, he saw Kyle was behind him and Adam had just joined them.

"Where did you go?" he hissed.
