Chapter 16
He pressed down the accelerator, turning the steering wheel at the sharp bends, feeling exhilaration in his blood. The excitement you get from nothing else but from speed. He smiled to himself, the cool morning wind rushing into the car. Beside him, Ash was gripping the seat with his eyes closed, his mouth twisted into a look of distaste. Ash hated speed.
He took a swerve, making Ash crash on to door. Cursing at Nate, Ash straightened and said, “Would you care to reduce the speed?”
Nate shook his head. “This is too fun,” he said, grinning at him.
“Jerk,” he heard Ash mutter.
It was too early for traffic so Nate didn’t have to worry about accidents. He zoomed through the streets easily. A few minutes later, Ash groaned.
“I think I am going to be sick!”
“Don’t be ridiculous,” Nate said, glancing at Ash who had his fist clenched into his mouth.
“I am going to complain to Lexi about this!” he gasped out as Nate took another turn illegally.
“You wouldn’t," he said warningly.
“I certainly will! As soon as I get to solid ground I’ll cal-”
Nate braked suddenly, making Ash’s forehead hit on the dash board. Smirking, Nate eased the clutch and changed gears. He didn’t accelerate though.
Alex can be a bit formidable. He certainly didn’t want her breathing down his neck, giving him a piece of her mind of ‘what if’ instances. Her sweet face would pucker up and a frown would form in between her eyebrows, her mouth pulled down in the corners, eyes flashing dangerously. He certainly didn’t want to rouse her anger.
They were nearing the orphanage now. With Nate’s crazy driving they had made the drive in less than 20 minutes. There was a big board with the Happy Kids orphanage logo on it, welcoming them. Nate drove through the gate, noticing the two security guards on either side. They looked different from the usual security guards. These guys were burly and looked alert. Nate gave them a nod and eased onto the driveway.
The Happy Kids orphanage was a big building. It spread around the place, with three buildings; one was the main building while the other two were where the children lived, he presumed.
He pulled up in front of the main building.
“Good luck,” Nate said, turning to Ash. Ash had gone rather pale. He usually got nervous at the start of a mission.
“Think of something! Think of-?” Ash glanced at Nate, looking lost.
“The orphanage ladies!!” said Nate, knowing it would help.
“Ah yes!” Ash’s whole face brightened. “The sweet kind-hearted ladies who spend their time helping unfortunate children!”
Nate gave him a cynical look. That was a little overboard.
Ash smiled at him sickly, “With their aprons and huge motherly bosoms, I’ll have a good time.”
Nate rolled his eyes. “Be your usual self, charming your way around and you’ll be alright,” he added. He gave this pep-talk to Ash all the time and Ash still needed the reassurance.
“Yeah yeah got it,” the blonde said breathing slowly. Ash puffed out the breath.
“Let’s do it!”
