Chapter 1 - The Start of Something New

Meet Chase Dean and Riley Evans (picture above) – they're the new paramedics at firehouse 51. Due to the closure of their previous firehouse they are moving so now firehouse 51 house two ambulances. They work on ambulance 67. Chase is 32 and Riley is 29. Chase has been a paramedic for 4 years and is also a fully qualified member of Squad (and truck) for the past 3 years whereas Riley has been a paramedic for 7 years.

They have been partners for 4 years and have loved every day of it. They must admit there has been a lot of bad days or call outs but there have also been so many good ones. There have been days when they just want to call it quits but they've been there for each other and are still fighting through it together. Not only are they partners at work, but they have been dating for nearly 2 years. They have one major rule – no matter what happens in their personal lives, never bring it to work. They have stuck by this rule from day 1.

"Riley! Let's go!" Chases shouts whilst screwing the lip onto his travel mug filled with steaming hot coffee before doing the same for Riley.
"I'm coming!" She responds before the pattering of loud footsteps could be heard racing down the hallway.
"We need to leave now – or we'll be later" Chase says, handing her the travel mug of coffee which she kindly accepts with a smile of thanks.
"Right then" She says, sliding into her shoes and jacket before picking up her keys and bag. Chase does the same before they walk out the door of their shared apartment, locking it behind them. They interlock their hands whilst they walk towards Chases car. They both chuck their bags in the boot before opening their doors and sliding into their seat – Chase in the driver's seat.
Chase turns the key in the ignition, making the engine roar to life before the radio switched itself on. He glances at Riley, giving her a cheeky grin, before pulling away and heading towards their new place of work.
They arrive at the firehouse 15 minutes later and pull into an unoccupied space before getting out and walking round to the boot of the car.
Chase opens the boot and hands Riley her bag before grabbing his own and shutting the boot. They share one kiss before switching into professional mode and walking inside. They are greeted by the one and only Kelly Severide.
"Hi, can I help you?" He asks, making his way over to the pair.
"We're looking for Chief Boden. We're the new medics" Riley says.
"Oh right – of course, I'm Squad Lieutenant Kelly Severide. You must be Riley" He says, reaching out to shake her hand before turning to Chase.
"and you must be Chase" He adds on.
"Right – I'll show you to Chief's office." Kelly says, ushering them into the common room and through to Boden's office.
Knocking on the door they are ushered in by Chief Boden.
"Ah you must be our new paramedics" He says, motioning for them to take a seat.
"Chase Dean" Chase responds, shaking his hand.
"Riley Evans" Riley responds, following suit and shaking Chases hands.
"Right, so you've met Lieutenant Severide, I'm sure he can show you to your lockers and all that and then I'll have everyone meet in the meeting room in 15 minutes for a meet and greet" He says, shaking their hands one more time.
"Thank you Chief." They both respond before following Severide to the locker rooms.

The first thing they both do is change into their uniforms before organises their belongings in their lockers. They both stick their names on the front of their lockers before walking out to the meeting room. Everyone soon files into the room until its full. Soon after Chief walks in and starts to speak.
"Right everyone, these are our new medics for ambo 67, Riley Evans and Chase Dean – I'm sure you've seen them around before but make them feel at home." He says, before walking out. Everyone takes it in turns to greet them before they excuse themselves to sort out their rig. The current medics – Gabby Dawson and Sylvie Brett offer to give them a hand and show them round their store room. The pair grab what they need before rummaging through their rig and scanning through their checklists. After making sure everything is filled to the brim they head into the common room and take a seat. They get chatting with Gabby and Sylvie and both soon conclude that they are going to enjoy working here.
"Engine 51, Truck 81, Squad 3, Ambulances 61 & 67, Battalion 25 – major car pile-up. Lake horn Bridgeway (made up address)" The claxon sounds, alerting everyone to a new call out.

Everyone jumps into actions and races out of the common room towards the vehicles. As the firehouse doors slide open, everyone hops into their rigs before speeding away to the call, lights and sirens blaring. 

Tah-dah! First chapter is up, I know it's a bit short but I thought this was a good place to leave it at. Please, please, please let me know what you think as I'm still unsure about this book. Also – all addresses in the book are made up as I know nothing about Chicago 😊
