Blood. Soo much blood. You never really grasp the concept of how much blood a human body has – that is until you see most it on the floor. Who she is and where she comes from doesn't matter. Nothing matters. Not anymore. At least that's how she feels.
Her name is Keegan Rossi, she's 16 and this is her story.
At the age of 4, her entire world changed. Both her mother and father died in a car accident. Keegan was sitting in the back and luckily, she escaped with minor injuries. Since that day, she has been bounced around child services. She's gone from foster home to foster home, only staying for a few weeks at most before being sent back to the care home. In the 12 years Keegan has been in care, she's probably had 30 foster families. Non-worked out. If she wasn't in a foster home, she was in a crummy care home. This all sounds terrible, right? Well – you probably guessed it, it gets a worse. At the age of 12, she was abused. She was beaten and raped by the only person she once trusted – her care worker. He was a lovely person, well – at least that's what she thought. Keegan went to the police and he got sent to jail, but it didn't help with the after math of the event. Since that day, Keegan has never felt safe. Never felt normal or cared for. Keegan has only really stayed in a care home since then. She has one person that she actually trusts. That person is her best friend of 4 years, Elena Tilson. They've always been there for each other, no matter what. But, even though she trusts her with her life, there are things she hasn't told her. Things Keegan hasn't told anyone.
Over the years it affected Keegan, but she's always beaten it. Until now. For the past year, she's been overcome by anxiety and depression. It's changed her, turned her into someone she's not. Keegan has scars. She's not proud of them, but they help take away the pain. Normally when you get injured or cut yourself, it hurts. But for Keegan it's different. It takes away the pain. It makes her feel better.
Keegan started cutting herself when she was 14. But Keegan has been clever about it. She's only ever done in places she can cover them and she's never done them to deep. Until today.
Keegan picked up the knife and couldn't stop. Sure, it hurt, but she didn't feel it. She felt numb. She took the knife to her wrist and made the cut. Only this time it was deeper. Keegan knew immediately that she had made a mistake, but she couldn't change what she had done. She grabbed a towel and tried to stop the blood that was oozing from her wrist. Nothing she tried to stop the bleeding was working. Keegan started to get light headed and dizzy. She panicked and looked at the pool of blood around her. She heard someone frantically banging on the bathroom door, screaming her name – then everything went black. The door was kicked down seconds later and one of the social workers burst into the bathroom. Seeing Keegan on the floor he stopped Elena going into the bathroom.
"Elena, go outside and wait for the ambulance!" He shouted, making sure she didn't see her best friend like this. Elena hesitated before rushing outside to wait for the ambulance. Within 5 minutes and ambulances had arrived. The stabilised Keegan before loading her up into the ambulance and rushing her into hospital.
At Chicago Med >>>
"Dr Halstead incoming!" Maggie shouted, drawing his attention away from the computer he was working at. He grabbed a pair of gloves before rushing over to the paramedics who were wheeling Keegan in on a gurney.
"What do we have?" Will asked, pulling on his gloves as they moved Keegan into one of the bays.
"Keegan Rossi, 16. She has a history of mental illness and was found in a pool of blood approximately 40 minutes ago. Her SATs are 98, pulse slow at 65. B/P is very low. We've pushed a litre of saline in to balance her blood pressure." Chout said, before they transferred Keegan over to bed.
"Alright, thanks guys" Will said, helping April hook Keegan up to all their machines.
"Keegan...Keegan can you hear me?" Will said, shinning his torch light into her eyes.
"Pupils are responsive to light. April lets get a full set of bloods. Hang another litre of saline and call Dr Charles or Rheese down for a psychiatric evaluation" Will said, removing his gloves, and using some hand gel.
"I'll be right back I'm going to go check her notes and talk to the social worker then I'll come and sort out her wrist" Will said to April and the other nurse who were sorting Keegan out. April nodded before Will left. Will spent the next 5 minutes reading through Keegan's notes before he went to talk to those who were waiting for Keegan out in the waiting room.
"Ermm, Keegan Rossi?" Will called, making 2 people stand up and walk towards him. He led them to the small meeting room and everyone took a seat.
"Firstly, I have to ask who you are and your relationship to Keegan" Will said.
"I'm Elliot Rushmore, one of Keegan's social workers and this is Elena, Keegan's best friend" The man said.
"Alright. Well, as you know Keegan self-harmed today and because of that she lost a lot of blood that's why she passed out. She's stable now. We've given her fluids and I will stitch up her wrist in a bit. We're also by law have to place her on a 72-hour psychiatric hold and we have someone coming down to speak with her." Will said. Elena had tears in her eyes.
"Can I see her?" Elena asked.
"I'm going to stitch her up and then I'll come and get you okay?" Will asked gently. Elena nodded, and Will left to go deal with Keegan. Within 30 minutes he had stitched and dressed Keegan's wrist up. Once Keegan was cleaned up and changed into a gown, Will went to get Elena and Elliot to let them sit with Keegan until Dr Charles or Rheese were available to come and speak with Keegan.
Within the next hour, Dr Charles and Dr Rheese came down to assess Keegan. They left her alone until they were able to transfer her upstairs. Will thought that Elena would be going back in soon and having just had to deal with a major RTC, everyone in the ED became busy. By now Keegan was awake and more alert. She noticed that everyone was very busy and though to herself that now would be the perfect time to leave without anyone noticing. She saw her leggings and hoodie in a bag on the side that Elena must have brought for her and carefully changed into them. She pulled the I.V from her arm and walked out. She slipped out the front door and walked. She didn't know where she was going but she carried on walking until she found herself somewhere that gave her the power to control everything.
Back at Chicago Med >>>
The chaos of the huge care accident had died down and Will was sat at one of he computers, typing up some notes from people he had treated. In the corner of his eye he noticed Elena walking into Keegan's cubicle, only for her to walk back out. She looked around and saw Dr Halstead, so she walked over to him.
"Have you moved Keegan?" She asked, cautiously.
"No...why?" He asked, standing up.
"She's gone" Elena said panicked. Will rushed over to her cubicle and saw the wires and I.V spread out over the bed. EH sighed before turning to Elena.
"Stay here. I'll go look for her. I'll call my brother, he's a cop" Will said, rushing to grab his car keys and jacket before running out of the building. He called his brother and explained the situations and Jay said he'd get the team out searching as they currently didn't have a case. Will's hands nervously tapped the steering wheel as he drove around searching everywhere he could think to look. It wasn't until he saw Squad 3 fly by in the direction of the city bridge that he panicked. He followed them and pulled up right behind them.
"Kelly!" He called, as Severide hopped out of the truck.
"I know who she is. Keegan Rossi, She tried to kill herself this morning." Will said.
"We're going to line up and go talk to her." Kelly said.
"Can I talk to her?" He asked. Kelly agreed and helped Will get harnessed up-ed and attached to a safety line before Wil was allowed to go and talk to Keegan.
"Keegan..." Will said gently.
"Please don't do this" He says, continuing to slowly move towards her.
She looks back at him, before shifting slightly.
"Why don't we just talk about this yeah?" Will asks, trying to gain her trust again. She shakes her head tears pouring down her face.
"WHY!" She screams.
"Why do you want to help me! I'm nothing! I'm no-one. Just let me die!" She pleads, looking down at the water.
"You're not no-one Keegan. You're a beautiful, young girl, with her whole life a head of her. We can help you. I can help you Keegan. I know you've had a crappy past, but you shouldn't let your past determine your future!" Will says sincerely. She looks at him as if she's deciding whether she can trust him or not.
"Please Keegan! Come down and we can talk" Will says, reaching his arm out to pull her over the railing as he was now sat on the railings. She nods her head slowly and takes his hand. Will wraps his arms around her waist, making sure she can't fall and waits for others come over to help. They help both Will and Keegan over the railings and Kelly unhooks the rope from Will. Will kneels down with Keegan in his arms as she completely breaks down. He wraps his arm tightly around her and covers her eyes as Gabby walks over and injects Keegan with a sedative. Will feels Keegan relax in his arms and her breathing steadies out. Kelly helps Will lift Keegan onto the gurney and then helps Will out of the harness as Gabby and Sylvie load Keegan into the ambulance. By now Jay and Erin have arrived on the scene. Will looks between him and Gabby. Jay nods, knowing what his brother wants to do and holds out his hand, allowing Will to chuck him his car keys.
"Thanks" Will says, before running over and hopping into the back of the ambulance with Keegan and Gabby before it speeds away to Chicago med.
When they got back to Chicago med, Keegan was taken straight up to the psychiatric ward where she would be held until doctors felt she was ready to be discharged again. Will had reached the end of his shift, so he finished off some paperwork before calling it a day and signing out. He changed into his normal clothes and went outside to meet Jay who had now brought his car to the hospital.
"You okay?" Jay asked his brother, seeing how he was affected by today.
"Yeah, it's just been a hectic day" Will said, giving his brother a hug.
"Molly's?" Jay questioned.
"Sure" Will said, taking the keys from his brother and jumping into the driver's seat. The Halstead brothers made the short drive to Molly's where they joined their friends in having a drink.
"How's the girl from today?" Kelly asked, as Will joined him at the bar away from the others.
"Keegan...she's doing okay. She's under a psych hold for the next 72 hours and then after that she won't be released until they feel she's ready" Will said, kindly accepting the new bear that Otis handed them.
"You did good" Kelly said, patting Will's shoulder before both men took a swig from their bears. Will decided to head home around 9pm and after the tough day he had, he jumped into the shower before curling up in bed. It wasn't long before he fell right asleep, praying that everything gets better for Keegan.
