Liam's words bounced around in her head, echoing every time they repeated.

I'm the Don, the head of my Family...

She had known that he wasn't someone as lowly as her father; her logical brain had told her from the start that her hopes of him being a low member of a family were her attempts at trying to keep herself from freaking out. But the truth was out there, hanging in the air like a bad smell.

She had thought that she would be better prepared for something like this. But saying it to herself and hearing Liam say those words were very different things.

The harsh reality of what she had walked into was slapping her in the face, and it shocked her.

Liam had moved away, giving her space to think once more.

She didn't know many Mafia men, and her limited knowledge of how Don's worked didn't swing in Liam's favour. But in saying that, the whole time that she had known him, he had never acted like anything she knew. He never lashed out at her, and he never demanded anything from her, Rowen wouldn't say that he was perfect, nobody was, but he was perfect for her in more ways than one.

If only she could get around him being a Don.

What if once she agreed, Liam turned into what she had hoped he wasn't?

What if he started to cheat on her, use her?

What if he turned into everything she ran from?

Her eyes lifted from her fingers, slowly moving across to where Liam sat, his legs crossed, one ankle resting on his knee. They tracked up his lean body, his fingers steepled together and leaning against his bottom lip.

The more she looked at him, the more she realized that her fear was misplaced. She didn't think that a man who waited for her to be ready, who put so much time and effort into her, a woman he hadn't known before, would turn on her as she feared.

She knew that she could walk out the door and not look back, leaving him sitting here alone. She could return to her home, and do her best to get back to the life that she had before he walked into it.

Her stomach twisted, her heart aching in her chest.

No, that wasn't an option.

Rowen knew that there was no going back from this. Her life was going to change; she would probably end up leaving her job, possibly even her home. It felt like she was betraying herself by thinking of letting it all go for Liam, but she knew that she didn't want any of it if she couldn't have him.

So much for being an independent woman, she thought, settling back into the chair, tucking her legs under herself as she continued to think.

Liam was watching her the whole time from across the room, being incredibly patient with her. She knew why he was being so accommodating, he wanted her to choose him, he wanted her to want him more than anything else, and he wanted her to trust him.
