After checking if everyone was attended, the teacher continued to provide more information.

Teacher: ...High school will go at a much faster pace than you are used to. Okay, you all look like you're about to fall asleep so I think I'll stop talking for now. Instead, let's do an exercise that will allow you as a class to get closer. You can stand up and push the tables aside. Take the chair with you.

I get up and do what he told us to do. When everyone is ready, he continues to talk.

Teacher: What we will do is something similar "speed dating". You'll place your chairs in two rows facing each other. After that you'll sit on your chair. You'll be having a conversation with the person in front of you for 2 minutes. When the 2 minutes are up, everyone on the right side gets up and moves one chair to the right. The person that is at the end of the row will have to move to the beginning of the row. Then you'll have a conversation with the person that will then be in front of you. If you don't understand, you will surely do so when we get started. So take your chairs now and form two rows.

Everyone in class does like the teacher says and form two separate rows. I put my chair in the row closest to me and sit down.

When everyone has sat down I look around to get a glance at the people I'll be talking to. My gaze sticks to Gavin sitting in the right row. That means we'll get to talk to each other. I hope it won't be so awkward between us. After all, it was more than a year since we last talked.

Teacher: I have written some examples on the white board of topics you can talk about. It can be what you did during the summer, why you chose this school or what hobbies you have. You may of course ask supplementary questions or other questions. I will tell you when time is over. You may begin.

The classroom is filled with chatter. I start by introducing myself and then asking the person in front of me a question.

Oliver: Hi. My name is Oliver. What is your name and what have you been doing during summer?

Michaela: My name is Michaela. During the first month in the summer break I worked at McDonald's. After that I traveled to Japan and then Thailand.

I wonder what Gavin did during the summer. He usually travels to visit his relatives. What else could he've been doing? He probably exercised a lot. I miss going to the gym with him.

Michaela: What did you do during summer?

Oliver: Eeehh. I played some soccer, but mostly chilled at home. What do you like to do in your spare time?

I know it was a long time since I met Gavin but I have to concentrate on the person in front of me. In addition, there are only five more people I have to talk to before I get to talk to him.

Michaela: Oliver?

Oliver: Huh? Sorry, I didn't sleep well last night so I'm having a hard time concentrating. What did you ask?

Michaela: I asked the same question you just asked me..

Oliver: That was...?

Michaela: What do you like to do on your spare time?

Oliver: Right. I'm in a soccer team. I've been playing for 10 years now. I also go to the gym when I can.

Teacher: Now it's been two minutes. Everyone on the left row get up and move to the left. The last person in the row moves to the beginning of the row.

Everything goes smoothly and I start a conversation with the person that is now sitting in front of me. I still can't stop thinking that I'll get to talk to my childhood friend soon.

Because I was thinking about how to start the conversation with Gavin and questions I should ask him, time flew by fast. I get up for the third time and go to the beginning of the row and sit in front of the last person before Gavin.

For the first time on this "speed dating" Gavin and I are sitting so close that we can hear what the other is saying.

The person in front of me is a blond girl wearing round glasses and the person in front of him is a short girl with her hair in a ponytail.

Time starts and I begin with introducing myself and ask what she's done this summer. She answers with what her name is and then talks about how she went to the country side over the summer.

While I was listening to what else she had been doing, I hear that the girl in front of Gavin starts laughing. With her hand covering her mouth and red cheeks, she continues laughing for a while.

Sally: Hahaha you are so funny Gavin. It reminds me of when...

Gavin, funny? When I last met him, he didn't joke much... She's probably trying to flirt with him. I wonder if Gavin already has a girlfriend. It wouldn't surprise me. When we were growing up there were several girls who confessed their love to him. But he always rejected them. Which was unfortunate because some of the girls were very cute and sexy. I look at Gavin and see a little smile on his face. He might have changed a lot since we last met.

The girl in front of me and I talk a bit more, so I pull a joke that makes her laugh. I see how Gavin looks at her like I just did with his partner and smiles. See Gavin, you're not the only one who can flirt with girls. Time passes and it's finally time to change partners.
