It was supposed to be a simple charity event—a way for the university to show off its philanthropic side while raising money for a good cause. Lana had been invited by one of her professors to attend, though she had little interest in mingling with the elite crowd. But after thinking about it, she decided it wouldn't hurt to go. It was just another event she could use to meet some of the faculty members and get more involved with campus life.
What she didn't expect was to become the center of a campus-wide rumor mill, all from one innocent photograph.
The event was filled with champagne, soft music, and laughter echoing through the halls of the elegant venue. Lana had found a quiet corner, just enough away from the crowd, when she ran into Ryan. They exchanged pleasantries, and for the most part, their conversation was unremarkable. It was just two students talking, a simple interaction—until someone snapped a photo of them.
The picture showed Lana and Ryan standing side by side, laughing at something they had just shared. Ryan was looking at her, smiling that rare smile of his that she'd come to admire. Lana was caught in mid-laugh, her features soft, relaxed. The kind of moment that would have seemed unimportant in any other context.
But to others, it was an opportunity.
The next morning, Lana woke up to a barrage of notifications on her phone. At first, she thought it was just the usual buzz of group chats and class updates. But when she opened her social media, her stomach sank. There was the photo—front and center on a popular campus gossip page. The caption read: "New couple alert? Ryan Ashford and Lana Cruz spotted together at last night's charity event. Is this the beginning of a love story?"
Her fingers trembled as she scrolled through the comments. Some were congratulatory, some curious, but the majority were snide and judgmental. Among the most hurtful were the comments from Priscilla, one of Cassey's loyal followers, who had a knack for stirring trouble.
"Looks like she's finally found her rich man," Priscilla's comment read. "Guess the scholarship didn't pay for everything. How else do you explain her hanging out with Ryan?"
Lana's chest tightened, and her fingers fumbled as she tried to make sense of the growing storm.
"Is it true?" Shannon's text appeared on her screen. "What's going on between you and Ryan? This is insane!"
Before Lana could reply, another message came in, this time from one of her fellow students: "Heard you're dating Ryan Ashford now? Is that how you're climbing the social ladder? What happened to your hardworking scholarship image?"
It didn't take long for other rumors to flood in. But the worst one was the one that really shook her to her core—the one that would ruin everything. Someone had spread a story about her being more than just Ryan's new "friend." They were now insinuating that she was trying to use Ryan to climb the social ladder and secure a future of wealth and status.
And as if that wasn't enough, another rumor started circulating: Lana was seen getting into a Porsche near the school. A car so obviously linked to wealth and status, it sent the campus into a frenzy.
Lana couldn't hold it in anymore. She called Shannon, her voice trembling.
"That's not true," Lana said, her voice strained. "The Porsche—it's my tutee's family's car. Mrs. Stevens asked her driver to pick me up. I didn't even ask for it! How are they twisting everything like this?"
Shannon's voice came through, low and steady, trying to calm her down. "Don't worry, Lana. People are just trying to tear you down. You know the truth."
But Lana could feel the weight of it all. She wasn't just the scholarship girl anymore. She was the girl who was using Ryan Ashford to get ahead, and she had no idea how to clear her name.
