Ryan Ashford didn't care much for campus events. The Autumn Festival Beauty Pageant was just another frivolous display of the university's obsession with appearances and status. He was only there because his best friend and cousin, Cameron, had insisted. Cameron always thrived in these environments, seeking attention, flirting, and making connections. Ryan, on the other hand, sat in the back row, arms crossed, his expression cold and distant, wishing he could disappear into the shadows.
The pageant was halfway through when Cameron nudged him sharply. "Check out that one," Cameron said, his voice low but animated as he pointed toward the stage.
Ryan barely glanced up from his phone. "Which one?"
"The blonde—third from the left. That's Shannon Castelan," Cameron said with a sly grin. "She's in my business ethics class. I've been meaning to talk to her."
Ryan shifted his gaze briefly to the stage. Shannon was bubbly, outgoing, and seemed to thrive under the spotlight. She wasn't the kind of girl who piqued Ryan's interest, but Cameron clearly thought differently.
"Go for it," Ryan muttered, returning his attention to his phone.
"And what about the other one? Lana Cruz?" Cameron added, gesturing to the tall, striking girl standing near Shannon.
Ryan looked up again, his expression unreadable. Lana's beauty was undeniable, but what set her apart was the way she carried herself—awkward, unsure, and yet completely unapologetic. She didn't seem to belong on that stage, and yet she owned it in her own way. Ryan let his eyes linger for a moment before shrugging.
"She's alright," he said flatly, though something about her caught his attention. It wasn't attraction—not yet—but curiosity.
"You're impossible," Cameron scoffed, shaking his head. "Anyway, I'm focusing on Shannon. She's got that energy, you know?"
Ryan didn't respond. He wasn't one for energy or enthusiasm; he preferred the quiet, the understated. But as the pageant concluded and Lana was crowned the winner, he caught himself watching her again, intrigued by her reserved demeanor amid the overwhelming attention.
Cameron and Shannon Connect
Later that evening, Cameron decided to make his move. As students lingered in the festival's afterglow, mingling and snapping photos, he spotted Shannon near the refreshment table.
"Shannon, right?" Cameron said smoothly as he approached her, his signature confident smile firmly in place.
Shannon turned, her eyes lighting up when she saw him. "Cameron! From business ethics!" she said brightly, instantly recognizing him. "What's up?"
"Not much. Just figured I'd come over and congratulate you. You were great out there tonight," Cameron said, his voice laced with charm.
Shannon blushed slightly but didn't miss a beat. "Thanks! But honestly, all the attention was on Lana. She was the real star tonight."
"Lana?" Cameron echoed, glancing over at Lana, who was standing by herself, looking a bit lost.
"Yeah, she's my friend. It was her first pageant, and she totally nailed it—even if she didn't want to be there," Shannon said with a laugh.
Cameron chuckled, leaning in slightly. "Well, I think you both did great. Maybe we should celebrate sometime?"
Shannon raised an eyebrow, a teasing smile playing on her lips. "Are you asking me out already, Cameron? Bold move."
"Only if you're saying yes," Cameron shot back, his confidence unwavering.
Shannon laughed, clearly enjoying his playful banter. "Alright, you get points for trying. Here, let's start with this," she said, pulling out her phone. "Add me on social media. Then we'll see."
