Lana's days were a blur of classes, late nights, and endless studying. Between her challenging coursework and the constant pressure from campus gossip, she was doing everything she could to stay afloat. But the truth was, Lana had learned quickly that a full scholarship didn't pay for everything, and if she wanted to make ends meet, she had to take matters into her own hands.
After a full day of classes, she worked the evening shift at the local coffee shop, her second job after tutoring struggling students. It wasn't glamorous, and it wasn't easy, but it was what she had to do. The hours were long, the pay was barely enough to cover her rent, but Lana didn't complain. She knew she had no other choice.
Tonight, the coffee shop was unusually busy. The clinking of mugs and the hum of the espresso machine filled the air, and the smell of fresh coffee mixed with the warm, comforting scent of baked goods. Lana wiped down the counter with practiced ease, her eyes darting around the crowded café as she prepared drinks for the line of impatient customers.
A familiar voice broke through the noise, and Lana turned to see Shannon walking through the door, her eyes scanning the room for her friend. She waved, and Lana gave her a tired smile as she approached.
"Long day?" Shannon asked, leaning against the counter as Lana set aside a half-finished latte to greet her.
"You have no idea," Lana replied, rubbing her eyes. "But it's almost over. Just a few more hours, and I can get some sleep."
Shannon raised an eyebrow. "Sleep? After the night you had last night tutoring? You should be out celebrating. You helped two students pass their midterms, right?"
Lana shrugged. "I just did my job." She reached for the coffee grinder and started preparing the next batch. "It's not a big deal."
Shannon sighed, crossing her arms. "You're way too humble. If I had your work ethic, I would be out there telling everyone about it. You're incredible, Lana."
Lana chuckled softly, grateful for the praise. But she knew she couldn't afford to let herself get distracted by compliments or attention. "Thanks, but I just want to get through this semester and figure out what comes next."
Shannon, sensing her friend's exhaustion, changed the topic. "Hey, speaking of getting through things, guess what?"
Lana raised an eyebrow, wiping her hands on her apron. "What?"
Shannon grinned, her eyes sparkling with excitement. "Cameron and I... we're officially a couple."
Lana blinked in surprise, then broke into a smile. "Wait, what? You two?" She leaned over the counter, her face lighting up. "I thought you were both just, like, casually hanging out."
Shannon laughed. "I know, right? We were. But after everything that happened with the pageant and, you know, all the drama, we finally realized we make a great team. He asked me to be his girlfriend last night. It's official now."
"That's amazing!" Lana said, genuinely happy for her friend. "I'm so glad you two worked things out."
Shannon beamed. "Thanks, Lana. Honestly, I'm just relieved. I've been through a lot of drama, and it feels good to have something real. Cameron's different. He's not like the others." She lowered her voice, her gaze flicking around the coffee shop. "I mean, he's still got that privileged background, but he actually listens to me. He gets me."
Lana nodded, feeling a wave of warmth for her best friend. Shannon deserved to be happy, especially after everything she'd been through. "I'm really happy for you, Shannon. I hope it works out."
Shannon gave her a teasing smile. "Well, if you ever decide you're done playing the 'I don't need a boyfriend' game, you should definitely give Cameron's friends a chance. He's got some pretty cute ones."
